Jennifer,
I actually did. I was kind of eager to hear what else could he come up with besides copying Richard Pryor. I mean, at the time when Eddie Murphy was out. He ignited a whole race of black folk to say "Hey I'm just as funny as he is !"
Because at the time the ( 80's ) their wasn't to many black comedians out there on circuit level to name a few (George Wallace,Marsha Warfield....)
Through the early 90's it was an explosion of Black Comics and White Comics alike. Their all over the place.Remember Def Comedy Jam,Comic View etc. There's so many Comics now that we have our own cable station Comedy Central.
Now this is where supply over exceeds the demand. At the time when Eddie Murphy was "The Prince of Comedy" every other black comedian used him to measure their selves "Am I funnier than Eddie Murphy"
But now the tables are turned Eddie Murphy will have to ask himself am I funnier than these cats that are out here now.
Back to where supply over exceeds the demand. Now its not about how funny you are any more. It all about image ,appearance of course you got to be funny. But you have to have that edge that America hasn't heard or seen in order to stand out of the pack.
Everybody knows who Carrot Top is . Not the funniest guy but you know who he is .Because of that damn red Afro and freckles . That guy is stamped in your head, weird ugh !
Image is important with Comedy now its what Hollywood wants because theres to many Mother Fuckers with a joke to tell. what seperates you from the pack maybe its a leather jacket, a twitch that comes and goes on stage . There's always something that makes you different.
