Jackson Jurors: One Knows Michael, Two Have Sex Offenders In Their Families And a few have more than just a passing familiarity with the law.

by Jennifer Vineyard

SANTA MARIA, California — Now that the Michael Jackson child-molestation case is in the hands of the jury, just who are the people deciding the singer's fate? And should he be worried?

Those potential jurors with any obvious prejudices pertaining to the matter were supposed to be weeded out during voir dire, which is the jury-selection process (see "The Jackson 12: Eight Women, Four Men To Decide Singer's Fate"), but the individuals ultimately chosen to serve on the panel do have a few interesting characteristics that could become factors during deliberations.

Three members have more than just a passing familiarity with the law. Juror #1 has taken some law classes. Two other jurors have spouses who've been on both sides of the law: Juror #10's husband has been arrested for drunk driving and drugs, while juror #12's ex-husband is a Santa Maria detective.

More telling is that two of the panelists have someone close to them who have committed or been accused of sex crimes. Juror #5 has a grandson who is registered as a sex offender, which could make her more lenient, while juror #8 has a brother-in-law who molested his nieces. That same juror's sister was also raped, at age 12 (see "The Jackson Jury: Does It Matter If You're Black Or White?").

While those jurors' familiarity with sex crimes might influence their opinion about Jackson, other jurors — specifically, jurors #2, #3, #8 and #12 — have something else in their backgrounds that might affect their level of sympathy for the alleged victim, a cancer survivor, in the case. Those four panelists have something in common — a history of cancer in their families.

Because Jackson and his Neverland Ranch play such a big role in defining the community, it's almost impossible to find people who've never heard of the singer in Santa Maria, but juror #11 actually knows Michael. His brother-in-law's sister works for the singer's doctor, and his sister and brother were invited to Neverland. Perhaps he's balanced out by juror #6, a 22-year-old who said during the selection process that Jackson is a "little before my time."

MTV News will have live coverage from Santa Maria on-air, online and in Overdrive when a verdict is handed down.

robfharris,

I have a feeling they could have unearthed 147 bodies of 12 year old boys wearing one glitter glove each and the jury would have aquitted. I mean, not guilty on all counts? Come on! Those jurors should immediatly take any 10-12 year old male relatives over to Mike's Neverland ranch for a party tonight. Bring your pajamas!

How long will it be before another young boy comes forward? Hopefully the family will not look like a bunch of swindlers, but if you look around this trailer park nation... most people look guilty as hell. An innocent and sweet young man like Michael Jackson can't be guilty! Of course not!

Sadly, it's going to take someone catching him with their son and killing him.

bingolong,
THAT'S WRONG... 'if he was a brother'
The problem with this case was the mother. I do believe Michael has done a lot of things. Unfortunately for the prosecution... the boys mother was a liability. They should have kept her off the stand.
Let's not get this wrong, Michael may have a lot of debt, but he's not broke, just too many people want their money from him at the same time. As long as you own a song written by Lennon and McCartney, you will NEVER be broke.
He owns over 200 of them and the 'Jackson 5ive' publishing.
"Hey Mike now that the case is over, we need to get these bills paid."
"OK, sale 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Rockin' Robin'. That should handle that... By the way, how's your son been?"

robfharris,
It's like I said earlier, it's the fact that this whole thing is going on in the first place that makes it just sad for me. If someone told me this was gonna happen in 1984, I would've told them they were completely nuts! Honestly, and I feel bad for thinking this way, but I almost wish he had been convicted so as to bring some finality to all of this. With a not guilty plea, it's more of the same and we still don't know the REAL truth. Things just get murkier and I hope Mike has enough sense left in his head to go get some help and get his fuckin life together. If he didn't do it, the nigga still needs some serious therapy. He's just like O.J. now, a career in ruins, but he's free. Which will you think will ultimately do the most damage? Because people, no matter what, are never going to look at Micheal Jackson the same way again. His credibility has been shot to hell because now the question is cemented in people's minds,
"Did he do it?"
We were already wondering that from the last time, but now you can't just shake it off.
Guilty or Not Guilty, it's still fuckin' SAD!
