Oops, didn't realise it would come to this...

That's not cool though that ODB didn't get permission - I hope it gets sorted out.

Joelmusick,
Oh please-on a scale of bad to horrible, this doesn't even rate-we have bigger assholes to go after(not that ODB is an asshole)! Don't worry!

Here's a classic example of a tune that was sampled but then approved by the artist for release. Subsequently, both parties made shiteloads of cash:

[/i]DNA Featuring Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner[/i]

Suzanne's record company freaked out when they heard that some London lads had sampled her voice from the original track, stuck a break behind it (and a stab) then called it a remix....and it's a great track.

Sampling is part of the music culture of today, and has been for many years; just because a sound has been created before, doesn't necessarily mean that nothing creative can be done with it. You just need to keep an open mind.

Will be busy on my own work before long, just built a studio. Will keep you posted, just waiting for my electrics to be finished ;)

All this said, I do think it's wrong that people disrespect others by using their material without consent. But it can work out mutually, as in this case, provided that respect is given.

Just my 2p's worth B-)

bingolong,

Thanks for putting up that list of samples.Heard a few of those records.Ive always wondered if it was Richard sampled in the Beastie Boys song Funky Boss.

Anyway sampling can be a good thing if used correctly, and of course if the original artist gets paid or some recognition.

bingolong,

There is a couple of other songs which i reckon sample Richard that you may know of.Im pretty sure they do,but im not sure....anyway...

A song on The Pharcydes first album Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde called Aw Shit(Or something similar) sampling Richard saying Aw Shit(I forget which Richard album it is off)

The other is the opening track on 3rd Bass album Derelicts of Dialect(I think its called that!) from the early 90s.I seem to recall that sampled Richard saying something like`Some white boys dont play that shit`

Anyway just asking if you know of these(as i dont have these records anymore so i cant listen to check!)
The thing is i only checked out Richards albums about 4 years ago and noticed loads of material which had been sampled in records i had heard years earlier

funky77,
I had both of those albums, but I only still have The Pharcyde album.I am not sure about the samples on either of those records but I will pull out my Pharcyde today to figure which Richard album they might have got it from.

I do know Pharcyde kicked a Richard Pryor line in one of their lyrics.
SoulFlower:"....shot him in the ass on the down stroke...."

bingolong,

I think the Pharcyde did sample him, I was listening to them today (a cd I mean) and even if his actual voice isn't used - his vibe is definately there!
That's cool because I LOVE THE PHARCYDE!!!

Ya mamma got a glass eye with a fish in it...
