Has anyone ever filed for a patent?

I had an idea last night that is so damn simple that I couldn't believe it isn't on the market.

I was looking into filing a patent for it so I can make my fortune and just post here and drink adult beveradges all day. ;)

Has anyone here ever filed for a patent before? I was looking at the U.S. Dept of Commerce's site and, like you would expect, it is a conveluted mess. Any ideas? I'm serious here. I'm sick of being poor, and this could make me some cash. (FYI, I'm not sharing this idea. Let's just call it a "widget")

JTF,

What is the idea? Just curious. I won't tell anyone.

Jennifer,

Ok, as long as you promise not to tell anyone. I call it an "anvil" It's made of iron and is large and heavy. You drop it from tall buildings onto people you don't like.

JTF,

Sounds neat, but what would make it cooler is if after it made contact with the victim's head, their head took on the shape of the anvil and birds would appear out of nowhere and begin circling said head. Now, THAT would be an item worth patenting.
