hey all... just givin out some hot tips on stuff for budding comics like myself... i recently went on amazon.com and ordered about 8 books about all sorts of comedy stuff.

i just started reading through them... but a good tip to anyone interested in getting started through a bit of reading... check out...

Stand-Up Comedy: The Book
by Judy Carter

its a pretty easy read, and a comfortable step by step for begginers.

for those of you not interested in becoming a comic, but are into the scene a bit... maybe check out...

The Last Laugh - The World of Stand-Up Comics
by Phil Berger

its all sorts of inside stories and such about it. even a couple funny stories with richard himself. (not to mention he has one of the photos on the cover)

anyways... i will keep on readin, and post any good findings here.

much love,

gareth

yo, good deal my man. however it has been my experience that the only way to be good is to do it. talk with the comics who are doing it, hang out....get drunk..party and experience life. cant get that in a book.

funkycomic,
oh totally... i agree whole heartedly. but like i said... for the green. not to mention... there could be something simple that you just arent pickin up... and a quick note from someone with a lot of experience could save you a lot of bombing gigs... i dunno. i guess i wont really be able to say till i am out and about in the scene full force.

much love,

Gareth,
whats crackin? I was in LA a few months ago and the comedy scene didnt seem as strong as new york. I was paul mooney at carolines and HOT DAMM!! he blew the place apart for like almost three hours and I got a chance to talk to him after the show for a few minutes. How strong is the LA comedy scence??

funkycomic,
to be honest... i am just starting to get involved. new york seems to be the epicenter for a lot of standup... but there is some pretty well known spots in LA.

i think you can get a career movin in either spot. im a california boy though... so i am best suited here.

and yeah, paul mooney is great. 3 hours? holy hell. dude earns his bread. i will post my findings about whats crackin here in LA as i find them.

much love

Gareth,
Paul Mooney has survived everybody-he is on top of his game-he works that road, he's out there all the fuckin time-he's like fuckin wine-the older he gets- the better he gets-Billy, Robin all bored the shit out of me, all so corny -i wish Mooney was up in that bitch at the Oscars-
Mooney used to write for me-check out those NBC shows-Mooney's all over it-
help us recapture our youth and some pussy-watch that shit and fantasize about back in the days!

:X

Gareth,
I've been performing for a long time. Your not going to get anything but Bullshit from books that aren't written by real comics. And to perform, almost every hack has written a book or has classes you can take. And at the end of your 10 week course you get to perform in front of a live crowd; that you help pack in because they want you to invite friends. BULLSHIT! call a comedy club and showcase, ask other comics that have seen you to refer you to bookers, ask the booker to let you showcase for free and if your funny negotiate date when you can come back and get paid. Or If know any headliners ask if you can be there opener. if you want to be funny take it to the stage and be funny. I've been lucky to have bigger name comics to groom me like Paul Mooney, Dave Tyree, Eddie Griffin, Charlie Hill, Brad Saunders and others. Talk to them and see. Good luck. If your L.A. I'm at the Improv on Melrose and the Laugh Factory. If your in New York try my boy Capone, or Rob Stapleton, or Ms. Tina Graham you'll get the work and some seasoning.

Peace.
