Love ya Richard

Hello everyone! I just discovered this board and I am so happy to see so much love for Richard. Please forgive me if this post is a little long. Since the topic is why we love Richard it will take me more than a couple of sentences to tell you why.
As far back as I can remember Richard has been a part of my life. I use to wait until my parents were asleep then sneak into my father’s closet and get his Richard Pryor
8 track tapes and listen to them all night. I thought Richard had to be the funniest man in the world. Years later I remember how it was such an event when the Richard Pryor show was on television. You see back then there weren’t many of us African Americans on television. Especially those staring in there own show. My parents and I would watch the show together and I remember my parents saying “This show is too good, he won’t be on long.” They were right! I also remember sneaking out of my bed late at night after everyone had gone to sleep to watch Which Way is Up every single time it aired on Showtime. I still think it is one of the funniest movies ever. Richard as the old man is just classic. “Somebody stole my piece of chicken, and I hope they choke on the bone.” Anyone else saying that line wouldn’t have been half as funny but it’s just something about the way Richard did it that made it hilarious.
Later I remember my mother and I went to see Richard Pryor Live in Concert. My mother had one of those roaring laughs that would make everyone else want to laugh right along with her. I got such a kick out of seeing her laugh so hard that she cried. My mother died a few years ago and many times when I am feeling sad and miss her I picture her laughing. I can recall in detail seeing Richard in the red shirt on the screen and in the corner of my eye I see my mother wiping away the tears from laughing. My father has Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. On a recent visit with him he was trying to describe a Richard Pryor movie that he had just seen. I know for a fact that he actually hadn’t been watching TV and “just seen” may have actually been several years ago. It is difficult for my father to speak but he was smiling from ear to ear and the story he tired to relay to me made him laugh. I find that beautiful! He no longer remembers what day of the week it is, current year or even who the president of the US is but he sure still remembers Richard Pryor and that memory makes him smile.
So if I had to choose one word for why I love Richard it would have to be JOY. Because constantly throughout my life Richard has brought joy with his comedy. So these words seem trivial in comparison but Thank You Richard. Thank you for a lifetime of joy. God Bless you.
