I just wondered if he also struggeled to make people laugh when he was startin out?. Im a fresh comic myself. I killed the first two times i delivered my material, but the last two times i did the ecaxt same material i experienced a very quiet room and few laughs. This is very confussing and make me doubt if i have talent or not. Does anyone know if richard to struggeled in the begining?

every comic struggles at some point, its just the good ones that bounce back, although I doubt Richard had much trouble garnering laughs from people... Word round the campfire is that when he was in prison/jail, whatever, he kept people from fuckin' with him by makin' em laugh...

*shrugs*


but that's just what I heard...


btw, for me it's always easier to be funny when its new material, for some reason when I keep doing the same thing over and over again I bore myself and I just can't do it with as much enthousiasm, maybe you experienced that same problem...

All you have to do is watch Richard's video "Live & Smokin'," which was shot in '71 at the Improv in front of a small white audience. The material itself is great, but for large parts of it you can almost hear crickets chirping, and Richard is clearly thrown. Then listen to the album "Craps (After Hours)," recorded only a few months before. It's a lot of the same material, but the audience is predominantly black--and the audience is consistently howling. (Even a lot of the bits that he would later record on the mega-successful "That Nigger's Crazy" didn't go over so well with the uptight Improv crowd; in fact, at one point in the video, someone even walks out! Fascinating.) But, of course, Richard would eventually win over people of all races because truth has no color.

...the show must go no...I saw an episode of Last Comic Standing were Ralphie May announced that his father had just died and he was somber but he used it as part of his act .It was tense at first from a viewers stand point but it ended up working...


You know I am pretty sure most any comic that has stepped out tthere to try something different has bombed.Andy Kaufman, to Carlin to even Pryor.

I keep expecting Jennifer to post something about Richard dropping a bomb so bad back in '79 that they had to open every window and have new tiles put in the bathroom.
