I'm up in Edingburgh (scotland) for the Fringe comedy festival, reviewing god knows how many comedy acts. It's amazing what passes for humour nowadays, luckily I packed my "Pryor Convictions" and some TMIC CD's so I'll always have a high standard to reference back to! ;p

That Old Hippie Chick,
sorry for the late reply, but I was too busy to log-on while I was up there. The Fringe was cool (there's still not enough , i won't say that the audiences are tough (it's unlikely that you'll get booed) but, because there are over 1000 shows running, if they don't like you, they'll walk out.
I saw a few relatively unknown acts, and a play called "the Exonerated" done by Americans about people who were wrongfully imprisoned....it was very deep! (check it out stateside). I actually hustled to take part in a show, so I didn't see as much as I wanted to. Rain Pryor had a show on, but it clashed with mine, so i couldn't see it (I know her name isn't too welcome in these parts, but I figured I'd let you know.)
I wrote a little more about it
http://www.mister-gee.com/chronicle.php - here', I would say that it is a good experience for any comic or performer (in terms of making contacts) but it is REALLY expensive to put on a show there (all the prices for everything get hiked up). I keep trying to convince some of my friends down in London to head up there so we can colour it up a bit!!
Peace gee

smjmcomic,
Oh my God, I have seen some shit comics in my days!! I once ran a talent night a few years back and there was this one guy who kept turning up every month. I don't know where he was from nor where he went since, but he was absolute crap. He used to get sooooo drunk just to get the nerve to step up on stage, and then we would all witness this excruciating process of him trying to remember his jokes. He mumbled, stuttered and slurred his words. There was one time when he actually left stage to go and look in his bag for something (which he never found!)
After a while, I started to look forward to seeing him. He started to get a little cult following simply because he was always the worst act on the bill. But comedy is such a tough game. I tried to do 10 mins at a bar that I frequented a lot. Even though I knew most folks in the room, it was totally nerve-wracking!
So whether a comic is good, great or shit, I'll still give them respect for getting up there and giving it a shot.
Peace gee

Jennifer,
Yeah, I gathered, but at least I kept it real by being in a show that was in direct competition (same time slot).....And we sold out!
You know you're our No 1 girl everytime

mojones, if only I could add one to my act...the only time I've been able to do it so far was doing a semi hybrid cb about someone elses act that had went on bfore me that tied into my set

Murphdogg,
Why don't you print this out several times and then during your act you can stop half way, walk into the crowd and take the sheets out of your bag and hand them around to the audience to read the evidence of your callback

. Of course you have to remember to bring the sheets with you or else you'll just be searching around in your bag while the whole room is silent.......trust me it's been done before, and it ain't pretty!
