[/i].....the Rock Steady Crew, show us what ya do make a break make a move!!![/i]
I went to the Notting hill Carnival on monday (Europe's biggest street festival), I had a good time saw a lotta old friends (and enemies
), but the highlight for me was seeing a breakdance battle featuring the Rock steady Crew fom NYC.
Of course, the only original member of the team left is Crazy Legs (who has looked the same for like 20 years!), it was an amazing battle with dudes doing back-flips, old drunken Master kung-fu moves as well as head spinning and the like.
I kinda felt sorry for Crazy Legs because he couldn't do the same moves as the younger guys, age had caught him up, and even though he tried, he couldn't muster up the same showstopping performances that I had seen before. Here is a man who is a part of Hip Hop history who was breakdancing back in the days of Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash (late 70's), but most folk in the crowd didn't really know who he was.
Ironically, it reminded me of Pryor Convictions when TMIC talked about filming "Another You" and knowing that he couldn't make movies no more. I watched as Crazy Legs looked on at the other dancers and smile as he probably reminisced over the countless battles that he had been in.
After the show I went to shake his hand and told him about the time I saw him in New York in the 80's. I was just a kid, but I remember him leaving the crowd awestruck.
I could see that he really appreciated being recognised for his long standing contribution to Hip Hop culture. It's good for us to pay respect to the pioneers of art-forms, for without their tireless efforts to elevate their chosen field we wouldn't be enjoying the fruits of their labour today.
I think that you can see where I'm going with this. Rappers today can take the Hip Hop pioneers for granted much in the same way that todays comedians can take their predecessors for granted.
Give credit where it's due....for without them...there wouldn't be you...
Peace gee (been thinkin too much!)
