Hey Richard- I read in your autobiography that you told Eddie Murphy that his comedy was mean. you said he got mad at you. The thing is , you are correct. i have nothing against Mr murphy but I and other people I know have always seen Murphys comedy as being mean. Your comedy takes potshots, but is not done to almost seem as though it was intended to hurt someone. His does. I just wanted to put my two cents in about this. I have always thought Murphys comedy was mean. i thought this many years before i read your remark in your book saying the same thing. Just wanted to let you know. -From Virginia the stripper in Texas

VirginiaP,
Speaking of mean comedy. What constitutes being mean? I've been accused of being meanspirited.

mojones,
Basically in my opinion, being mean spirited in comedy to me means, picking on say disabled people or anybody who are not able to speak up for themselves.
There is a difference in poking fun out of a nationality and being racially offensive for example!
I should know being Irish, there's plenty of jokes about us but when I was at school I had the piss taken out of me constantly which wasn't funny as it was racially motivated.
I'm sure there are others on ere who could explain what I'm trying to say better than me mainly cos I've been up for 26 hours! Damn working nights and English Cricket lol.

ToByD, being irish myself sometimes it get's my temper up when people mock the irish, when this guy told me that all irish were drunken skirt chasers...I would of gave him the what for about it, but I was semi passed out drunk in some strange woman's bossom at the time..

I must agree that some of Eddie's comedy is mean. That's one of the reasons I never cared for Joan Rivers. She always reminded me of a hateful little kid that would just say the most mean things and if anyone challenged them on it would say "Well, I am just a little kid. You can't get mad at me." When a celebrity would speak out about her unkindness she would defend herself by saying that she is a comedian and that is what comedians do. She has nerve to actually insult others looks! I hated when her and her daughter were on E as the fashion critics. How the heck did Joan Rivers become qualified to be the judge on fashion? She would smile and tell everyone how great they looked and as soon as they walked off she would trash them. What a backstabber!
