Walking around brooklyn the other day and ran into a new copy of the just released, LADY SINGS THE BLUES SPECIAL EDITION...I just finished it today and the film is still magical to me. Richard was the best as always...good to learn on the commentary track that Richard and Diana impovised the whole bit (Who is it? Is it "Me" or "Say Man?") before he got beat with a shoe...lol...I mean gun. I think. What the hell did he get beat with?

jermainebailey,
I wrote something about this in the page one section, but nobody thought it was really page one news I guess, lol, even though I did. You hit the nail on the head, jermaine, the film is magical. I can't describe it, but something in the film itself just sucks you in totally. It was just top of the line performances from everyone including the producers, director, and the cinematographer (who I found out is the same guy who photgraphed "Scarface", my main man John Alonzo RIP). I can just imagine what this must've felt like to watch this film in a theatre in 1971 for the first time. Something about those 70's films, man. They just had that magic touch about them. The best ones all feel like this and I think it's rooted in the sense of realism with the technology moving forward in terms of how celluiod photographed. It hit a point where it really had a defined, realistic look without looking too clean or too sharp. (Sorry to get all technical on ya) I mean there is this shot of Ms. Ross singing at the end (the song she does before the final one) and right at the end she hits this(I don't even know what to call it) but the camera angles up on her and i swear it's like the girl is singing before God Almighty. It's maybe a five second shot, but it is truly magical and you're on the ride with her at the moment. It's like the acting, the photography, and the music melding together into one mesmerizing moment. A film that truly gave black folks their moment to REALLY shine. I don't think another will come along like it for a long time.(Unless I make it! ;p)

dougdigitalpro,

Does anyone know who Blinky williams is? She sang the very 1st song in the movie - "Tain't nobody's Bidness"? Her version is so cool to me....I can't find anything on her. I'm mesmerized by her voice....help!!!!?????

I actually bought the movie again so I can just listen to that song....although I always end up watching the movie. Richard and Diana really shine in those scenes together...wow!!!!!

Vee,
Yeah, that is a cool song. And I notice it gets played a lot throughout the film. Somewhere on the net has to have something. If I see anything I'll let you know. :)
