funkycomic,
It's hard to pinpoint because I literally can't remember a time in my life when Rich wasn't the man,but these are two memories from my early toddler days that standout:
-Back in the day we had a copy of Bootsy Collin's "Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!" and right next to it we had a copy of Richard's "Bicentennial Nigger".We had alot of other records but if you are familiar with these album's artwork you'll understand why these are the only two I remember(I thought they were coloring books).
- I had to be about 2 years old when I saw "Which Way Is Up" at the movie theater. The only thing I could remember was the movies ending when Richard was walking down the street.I didn't understand at that age what was going on but it still made a strong impression. The way Rich was strutting with it and that funky baseline from the theme music had me thinking "THIS MOTHERFUCKER IS COLD!!"
After that it was over!!

funkycomic,
I was 6 years old when I first heard of richard pryor. My mom and I found a piece of paper that I wrote in the 3rd grade about what I wanted to be when I grow up. I said Two things a Basketball player and Richard Pryor....I should have been a Basketball player, they would have gotten less ass whippins from my mamma growing up.

funkycomic,
I think imitating Richard probably got a lot of us in trouble, one way or the other...
This will date me, but I can still VIVIDLY remember seeing Richard on Ed Sullivan for the very first time. I had to be 14 or so, probably around 66 or 67. Richard did this incredible routine of a guy trying to teach Lyndon Johnson how to say "Negro". It was brilliant, and sufficiently radical to make a big impression on me.

1975 - on Saturday Night Live. I was 11. I saw Richard and Chevy Chace do the job interview sketch. I grew up in a very mixed section of New York City, so those words were thrown about all the time, only on the show it ended in laughs instead of the usual fist fight.
From there I saw the movies and TV appearences, but Live at the Sunset Strip, that's when I first SAW Pryor. I was 17 at the time, and I saw it ot the movie theater on 86th and Lexington in Manhattan. It's when I saw all the power and dynamic passion that a comic could bring to the stage.
I'd heard the Pryor albums before, but seeing this movie just blew me away. Richard Pryor wwas the only performer I've ever come across who can make you feel a joke one way when you hear it, and feel it another way when you saw him do it in concert.
That was the movie that made me want to do comedy, and the next year I started and never looked back.
