Why did they coin the term "John" for men who visit prostitutes? Wouldn't a name like "Bill" be more fitting.. You know thats what's going through the girls heads when they workin.."He's the light Bill, He's the phone Bill, He's the cable Bill. ect.ect." Just wonderin. stupid shit like this runs through my head when I'm tryin to sleep..

This is actually easy...

The term "john" comes from where a typical place for taking a prostitute is... the bathroom, or "john."

Where the term "john" came from in terms of its usage for reference of a lavratory is a whole other matter. This term actually came to be due to the common scent of unclean public restrooms. When one would visit such an unforgiving place, it would remind them of a bathroom I may have recently visited, as in "I guess John was here." Since saying this became burdonsome as the number of unsanitary shitholes increased, the shortening of the name became necessary. Thus, "john" became the common term for such a place.

After I posted this I was telling my husband about it and he explained the same thing to me about men and dirty bathrooms and such, but now I think it's time to give a more respectful change for the prostitutes and leave the word john to gay men who meet up in the bathrooms. My son when he was little got escorted to the mens bathroom by my husband and when they went in there were two guys in it blowing each other, my son was four at the time and it was in Macy's. Now I don't mind anyone getting their freak on gay or straight, but I got pissed off as hell because they were doing it in the bathroom of the shoe dept where there were loads of children, I think it was close to a holiday. So I stuck my head in the door. I called them nasty mutherfuckers and told them to go pack their shit somewhere private That my son didn't need to see their aids ridden dicks. They hid in the stalls and I waited a while for them to come out, but they kept crackin the door and peering out. So I reported them to the shoe people. I still have a hard time lettin my son go to the bathroom in public places like that.. For a long time made him go into the ladies. But now he's 10 and the ladies look appalled when I do it. But I still make hubby escort him to the mensroom..
