Anybody else out there who is a stand up with kids? Has the traveling been much of a problem and how have you met with the problem?

Re: Parenting and Comedy
Tommy Blaze,
Hi Tommy. I have a 5 year old and I find getting babysitters are the best when I am doing local gigs. If I am doing gigs where I have to travel I ask if it is a place that accepts kids (like restuarants and family friendly places) that way she can be there during my gig. I always bring her things to do of course but she loves to hear her mommy, "Make the people laugh". Of coures I have my husband there to help as well. If it is a bar or club then I have to get a sitter to either come with us to watch her while my husband and I go to the gig or I have to leave her with a babysitter overnight. Getting steady responsible sitters SUCKS it is my biggest stress point. I never have nerves about a gig I am always worried "who will I get to sit".
If you are having a hard time finding a sitter you can trust try you local church or teenage kids of friends and family. I live in Sydney Australia and from NY so I have no family here to help me so I know how hard it can be to find a good sitter. Also try to look for teenagers who are between the age of 16 and 18 but who have younger siblings because they will have grown up taking care of kids younger than them and tend to have a more mature attitude. Stay away from any teenagers who have boyfriends. They are too unpredictable. I also like teenagers who have a goal (saving for college or a trip or a car) hence the reason for the extra money because that will keep them hungry for the work and will be willing to please.
It is hard doing what we do with kids believe me and I am envious of all the young guys who come to my open mike night who have no responsibilities expect for getting up for work the next morning. On the other hand where they may take the gig for granted I am totally happy to be there and getting some time away from my daughter with just me and my husband.
Honestly my dream is to take my daughter everywhere I go. I look at the three of us as a team and the more she is apart of the team the more she appreciates what I do. She sees me practice and knows my material off by heart (SCARY) but we have a lot of fun. So keep your chin up, remember they won't be little forever but you don't have forever to do what you love to do either. You have to find the balance.
I hope this was some help to you.
xoxo

Tommy Blaze,
Hi Tommy. I have a 4 month old and am just getting back into performing. I'm staying local for now, but I'm encountering problems (nothing I can't overcome). It is a hassle, but it can be done.
