Re: offbeat movies
sahnja,
I can't think of anyone who could pull off portraying Mr. P. ... maybe some unknown up and coming comic. It would take something massive to impress me. It's not worth it if they don't do Mr. P right!
And Gummo - there's nothing like a poor white trash dad prostituting his down's syndrom daughter and peeking in over the door to make the sun shine on your day. The scariest part of the movie is how real it all is. Didn't that same director or writer do another icky movie? I say icky in relation to my reaction.

sahnja,
Gummo was fucked up. The director wrote the movie "Kids" which was disturbing as well.

rsmayton,
That's right! Kids - I avoided it after seeing Gummo. While I don't know anyone who does those fucked up things in the movie - at least, not that I'm aware of - the look of it reminded me of some parts of W.Va. I hate to say that because I don't want people to get the wrong idea about W.Va. There are wonderful people and wonderful places there - but besides the poverty, there's an isolation, a misguided boredom that shows in the run down nature of some of the people and places. The wrestling of the chair really sticks out in my mind. Or is that another movie?

sweetluchia,
that's a good point, SLJ does have that passion in his eyes, But, SLJ has that unmistakeable voice though, which whould definitly take away...I think that'd be his biggest challenge.
sahnja,
I've never seen Kids, but I've heard it's pretty fucked up, more so than Gummo. As strange as gummo is though, I must say there was some funny shit in there(unintentionally I'm sure). I always look for funny things where they aren't meant to be though.

Re: offbeat movies
cire,
Good point about Samuel L's voice but knowing the actor he is, I'm sure he would work on it and work on it until it was perfection
I also have no doubt that he'd wear a disguise and go perform in comedy clubs and bar rooms on open mic nights to experience what a stand up comic goes through on stage. that's what kind of actor Samuel L. is a perfectionist just like Mr. P. is with his work. I hope they'll at least let him audition for it. I'm sure he wouldn't disappoint, he like Mr. Pryor is a master of his craft.
Angie,
I disagree about an up and coming comic playing Mr. P. b/c they aren't going to be able to shake their own style on stage to play his-no matter how hard they try. That's the beauty of this awesome God given gift-each comic has their own unique stage presence

SweetLuchia,
I agree - I kind of thought an up-and-coming would be good because they might not have developed their own style yet. It might be easier to take on Mr.P's personality than for someone with a well-versed act. I have to see some more Samuel L. before making a judgement call. I've not seen anything but bad muthafuckas and cops!

Angie,
LOL
I'm sure once you see [/i]A time to Kill[/i], [/i]Changing Lanes,[/i] [/i]The Negotiator, Jungle Fever[/i] etc. you'll see what I mean about how Sam can communicate with his eyes and his expressions without saying a word. He's just a brilliant actor, he truly is
Luchia
P.S. I really like your posts, it's nice to have you with us at the Pryor Cyberhome

SweetLuchia,
Thanks Luchia! You're my first welcome - besides Jennifer of course. I was hoping I wasn't making too much of an ass of myself! ;p
I wanted to see changing lanes but I've been a little oversensitive lately and have to be careful about what I watch. Also, I don't rent movies. It's all about what's on the bajillion movie channels I have or if something's available on PPV.

Trudy,
Yes, lynch is offbeat and definitely on drugs ... no doubt about it. But the stuff is great to watch. I can't think of a favorite right now but I'm slowly falling asleep. Perhaps tomorrow.

Re: offbeat movies
SweetLuchia, I'm still with you on Jackson as a strong contender, but the point about actors playing comedians that Sahnja made is valid; Lenny was good and I'm glad it was made, but I thought Hoffman didn't quite have the man's funniness intact--which isn't a huge failure, when you realise how tough it must be to be playing a huge, recent figure like Mr.Bruce. All I know is if we got an actor to play RP, I'd be happy with Samuel L. I think he made a good Shaft too. And yes, I figure he'd approach it carefully. And Sahnja, I saw True Stories yeeeeaars ago--we have it here at my house. I thought it was pretty good when I saw it, but all I remember is the presence of John Goodman.
