Re: Press Release
How Long Will It Last?
“7 Years & Six Months”
The new feature by S.C. Douglas
Starring Michael L. Pope & Deidre Johnson
The question above is put to Bridget & Terrence Rawlings, a married couple in crisis who are the focus of this controversial feature that deals with greed, fear & possessiveness.
The filmmaker elaborates:
“When I first came up with the initial concept years ago, I just wanted to do a quality urban drama. Something we weren’t seeing enough of in the mid 90‘s. If Spike Lee wasn’t doing it, it wasn’t really happening. I had the story idea, but it had not been sharpened to a point yet. The story wasn’t even my top concern initially, I was just trying to get the thing made. But as the years went on and I kept going over it, it became apparent I was tapping into something very primal. Even more so now as everyone knows or has known someone in the striptease industry or someone who has been recently laid off from the auto plants.”
He continues, “I think a lot of peoples’ heads are caught up even more so now in materialism & greed. So much, they ignore their families to make sure they can keep up with the Joneses and most of the Joneses, as quiet as it’s kept, really don’t care what you have anyway. They just want gossip to talk about. It’s worse now than it was in the 80’s. The difference back then was it was fun and cool to be greedy. People do it now to just stay afloat and survive. There’s nothing fun about it anymore.”
Shot entirely in Detroit for $12,000, some of which was funded through a grant by the Public Benefit Corporation, it was a project three years in the making.
“It took its toll on me, because of it’s heavy subject matter, but in the end I think we constructed a pretty engaging feature that hopefully will hold some kind of moral lesson in it for people. I just think it’s time to take a break from the cell phones with a hundred ringtones, the Play Station 2’s & get out of the cars with the spinning wheels and get back to focusing on family like back in the day. In the end, that’s all you’ve got anyway.”
Hang out, pick up a bumper sticker or a t-shirt (and defintely the movie) and support that independent urban cinema!
WE GOTTA DO IT LIKE SCHOOL DAZE!!!
