Robbie,
You seem to acquience to a lower standard!Meaning-"'well that's what the shit is these days!" But why accept it? If you work that place-why don't you kick those standards up a notch!? Even by hollering at your boys and respecting a little more-the whole place had a bad whiff of desrespect-on every level!
And if you're saying that this low-level "ghetto humor" works and sells tickets-I didn't hear a lot of people laughing their asses off last night-I saw people milling around-leaving and some tryng like hell to laugh! I think Mo Betta Monday is a pick up opportunity and not about comedy and that's sad for the comics!
And I mean no disrespect to you by telling you the truth!

Jennifer,
I love hearing the truth. But i've talked to comics before. and you can tell them till your blue in the face, but no one like to be preaced to I raise the bar when I'm on stage. The days of comic comradere are over, most of these guys have been performing for 5yrs. or less and think that they know it all because there making a little money. When Older more etablished comics give them advice, the awnser is " man I just did so and so. what have you done, how come you aint made it yet; you've been doing comedy for 20yrs and your not famous yet." that's the attitude. So I stop giving good advice and concentrated more on improving me. I'm happy and successful. 20 years ago there weren't that many comics now everyone is a comic and everyone wants to get paid. Garteth said to me last night that everyone on stage sucked. and he was probably right. every once in a while they book a lot of Booger Wolfs. The talent coordinator, doesn't book that many great up an commers. Politics as ususal but instead of being bitter you just go and work. Mark Lonow the old owner of the Improv said to me...Just work on being a comic, don't worry about the politics. I'm working on being better and I'am, Just most people won't and don't follow suit, they are happy were they are at. It may sound self centered but everytime I get up on that stage at the Improv, I'm honing my craft, the next guy has to do the same or better and if he or she can't Oh well, I've tryed to help, but If I'm not a celebrity they don't want to listen. People love to get advice from folks that have made it. I'd rather get advice on being a comic from Richard Pryor over David Allen Greer. Why? because Richard is a famous comic..David is just a actor thats a comic.
Keep Telling the truth it is always appreciated.

I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me!
Re: Monday night and beyond...for struggling comics.
Jenny reminds me a lot of my mom, and that's no insult no matter what Bingolong has to say about my momma, in that she says it the way it is and pushes you, in a good way, to take it farther than you thought it could go, even if it's not what you want to hear.
Robbie, since you seem to really love what you do, and that's rare enough in itself, then you are already famous man.

Inkblot,
Richard has really enjoyed this discussion! I've been filling him in on this talk and his contribution is in everything I say!
Richard says: "Wood shed, wood shed" and Love to every struggling comic!

And Richard says:-"if you want advice about comedy, listen to my shit"

Re: Monday night and beyond...for struggling comics.
Jennifer,
You hit it on the head -- "DO YOU BEND TO THE TREND OR DO YOU STAY WITH WHAT'S TRUE. Real great stuff withstands the test of time!"
Artistic vision is for the artist only to define. The job of the comic as artist is to evolve the artform - not by conforming to the present standards, but by imprinting their artistry on the world no matter what the artistic consequences.
You gave perfect advice, we'd all be wiser taking it.
