I've seen George Clinton three times... each time I've been to a show I've looked at the band members behind the speakers smoking. I can not imagine how much smoking they will be doing on and off stage there.
Clinton gives you your money's worth. Never seen him perform less than 2 hours non stop.
Sat through a 4 and a half hour jam session. Bootsy Collins came from out of the blue 2 hours in and took over the show for close to an hour.
Now that Johnnie's gone, I guess I should start being nice to the cops.

robfharris,
I saw George once in Holland a couple of years ago.
They were all stoned and some of the bandmembers were hitting on this cool chick with a 2 meter high afro
He played about 3 hours too.
Prince has long shows too..he played a 3 hour concert in Rotterdam and went straight to a niteclub and played till 5 in the morning 8-O 8-o
True funk B-)

blumustard,
That's the best thing about Prince, he takes over a small club after most of his concerts and jams at least two more hours after a three hour concert.
Prince has the best sets, I've seen him twice wish I had the money and the time to do a "Dead Head" thing on one of his tours.
Prince plays with Clinton a lot, I have a lot of bootlegs with the two of them from the late 80's through 2002.
I think being stoned is a requirement to play for Clinton, it's right after knowing where to get drugs, but above actually knowing how to play a musical instrument.
Now that Johnnie's gone, I guess I should start being nice to the cops.

blumustard,

I have 8 versions of [/i]We Can Funk.[/i] The released version is probably the worst. The last time I saw a Prince show was the Act I tour. I used to be a Prince fanatic, but then lost the great interest in his work. I still love the music, but He could drop a new album tomorrow and I wouldn't know. The last Prince release I ran to the store to grab was Emancipation. I was disappointed. Too much. I realized then that WB sitting over his shoulder was a good thing. They pushed him to make things better, and that's a very good thing. If on his own, [/i]Sign O' The Times[/i] (his peak) would have never been. It would have come out as [/i]Crystal Ball[/i], a 3 LP set that did not have the same focus. I have the [/i]Dream Factory[/i] LP, and it is a good thing that it evolved into [/i]Sign...[/i]

Think about this: He said WB was holding him back. They only let him release records about once a year. Once freed from the chains of WB he could release music at his own pace. How many records has he released since? Less than he was doing at WB. And the best part: All his records are sounding the same over the last 10 years. The best works he has done recently have been his instrumental recordings.

Don't buy bootlegs. I knew a Prince bootlegger. He was a dick. Bootlegs only feed people who live off stealing material. Find a trade partner who can hook you up with music. It's cheaper and doesn't put cash in the pockets of sleezy bastards.

JTF,
I agree...the "we can funk" on Graffiti Bridge sux.
I didn't know there were 8 versions..lol..I only know around 4 different ones.

I got every Prince album..lol..except the bootleggs.
Sign of the time was great...the movie was filmed in Rotterdam by the way.:)
I like the Miles Davis/Prince album "Crucial" too.
I'm not to Crazy about Diamonds & pearls but "The rainbow children"is great and fresh.I hear it alot:"to many albums etc" but I still love all his work. :)
He went on tour with the horn section of Sly and the family stone & Larry Graham.I enjoy his concerts more than the albums..it's always different.Love seeing Sheila E. too..hehe.

I just got my Parliament tickets today..damn..I'm really gonna see it. ):)

JTF,
He definitely made better records 20 years ago, even though if you dig far enough, he's still more than capable of turning it out from time to time.

But as one who has seen him in concert since the '80s, I can tell you that, as a live act, he's better than ever NOW. And the band that he toured with last year kicks The Revolution's ass. I was fortunate to see him four times last year--twice at the House of Blues and twice at the Staples Center. When he's on (and he's been "on" consistently of late), he's still the baddest little motherfucker around.

blumustard,

Actually, very little of the finished movie was from the Rotterdam show. Basically he filmed the show then decided to do some overdubs to clean up the sound. After cleaning up the sound he rebuilt the stage in a Minneapolis warehouse and brought in a crowd to do some additional filming, which turned into most of the finished film. Most of the finished product is from the overdubs and MPLS filming.
