SweetLuchia,
Im glad this post got some feedback.Did anyone mention Rita Rudner? She has got one sharp mind!By the way, I hope no-one minded me logging on using my wifes logon- I'm not that sharp with posting from scratch( That's why my wife is the comedian, and I'm not! Being a jazz musician, I relate very closely with the comics thinking however). I look forward to getting to hear you ladies at some stage when Daria and I leave Australia and go back to N.Y.
I think the time is right for a changing of the guard in comics, it has happened in jazz time and again, and I believe there is definately room for some rising female comics on the world scene.I'll try and get my talented wife to train me set up my own post. Regards from downunder. J.C.

NickFlanagan,
Margeret Cho's impression has substance though. When she uses her accent, it has a joke underneath. Whereas unfunny comics such as Dat Phan, no substance. He somehow got on tv doing an accent and laughing at it...at his own jokes...he wrote.

SweetLuchia,
I hope you stick to your guns! Holding out is extremely hard, and comes at a price. I'm overweight, and back in 84 the Ed McMahon version of Star Search was auditioning comics in NYC. They saw my act, liked my style and writing, but wanted me to do fat jokes so I'd be more of a character. I refused. I didn't have any because they were't who I was.
The manager I had at the time dropped me because he said I was hard to deal with. All the comics I started out with told me that they thought I was crazy. It would take me another 4 years before I got on TV. Convictions have a price.
In retrospect it was the right decision, but quite honestly thank god I had to make the decision when I was 20, and filled with hubris. It would have been a lot different if I was 35, and facing my last chance at TV, which is the situation so many of these female comics are put in.
I don't think they're selling out as much as doing what they can to keep their dreams alive.

jane_haze,
Maybe Margeret Cho's stuff does have some substance but did SHE write it? I've met quite a few comics who've said she's notorious for going to "The Laugh Factory" on their open mic nights, sitting up in the balcony and stealing an unknown/new comic's good material!

jane_haze,
Before I first stepped on stagethe MC from that night, Bernedette Luckett, pulled me aside and said 2 words that I've lived by for 20 years -- have fun.
Being on stage will teach you so much, but those first few times when you are blissfully ignorant, just do. Go up, have fun. There's time to learn, and hone, and study later - just fall in love with the stage first, and everything else will follow.

Re: Female comics
SweetLuchia, is that really so about Cho? I sw her last tour and mostly it consisted of impressions of her mom, taking shots and George Bush, and shitting her pants. Did she steal the pants shitting anecdote?
Sometimes it seems like there are stories about most '90s-successful comics stealing acts, like Leary stealing Hicks, or Carrot Top stealing Gallagher...I even heard that one of my faves, Norm Macdonald is or was a joke thief.
I think Margaret Cho is also four thousand times as funny as she was during the 'All American Girl' period.
And Jennifer, I buy that about Margaret Cho being super-serious durin an interview. In fact, my main problem with her is that sometimes she seems more intent on being inspirational than hilarious.
I actually would like to also mention Sarah Silverman again, because her humour is so dark that I love it. I don't think she's an actress turned comic; apparently she's been doing the standup since her late teens, which was followed by a writing job at SNL at the tender age of twenty two. I'm twenty three and I'm just stoked to get out of town dates.
Not too shabby.

smjmcomic,
Cool I didn't want to be the only one on that.I don't know why I think she is so hot.She is not noone you would consider a drop dead goregous chick but I think her personality and her features do it for me.But back on the topic before we start getting "hate post" from the ladies on this site.
I used to like this female comic who would put little subliminal shit in between her jokes. It was a gimmick but a funny one.Anyone know her name?
