honesty

Post by doley »

I'm a new comic, got my first gig in a couple of weeks and I want to know how many comedians feel the need to be honest up there. Rich is an inspiration to me particularly the way he never feared speaking his mind and it's something I want to emulate. I want to be honest about what i really think up there. The dark shit. The shit I think at 6am. The shit I hate, the shit I love, ALL the shit. I want to talk about my prejudices and my selfishness but I want to be funny with it. I have my material worked out for my first set and I'm a little scared about how it's going to go over, that maybe the shit is too honest and not actually remotely funny as a result.

I guess honesty just isn't an issue for you guys then? More concerned with the gags.

doley,

I prefer raw emotion while embellishing the truth. But who am I to say?

doley,

Honesty and truth are the ideal. But it has to be cloaked in humor. It's stand up comedy, not philosophy. RP spoke with brutal honesty but he kept you in stitches at the same time.

mojones,

Yeah you have to be very careful, TMIC did a good job of balancing honesty and humor. It seems that George Carlin on the other hand has veered further from the humor and more into honesty. I think his act has suffered as a result.

Anditsdeeptoo,

Carlin earned the right to do that though. An open miker shouldn't try it. You have to qualify to be that honest. The deal with Carlin is HE CAN BE FUNNY WHEN HE WANTS TO!

Let me tell you a little about George Carlin, I saw him perform in Aug 2001 in Ct. He explained, after a few brief comments, that this tour is part of his warming up for his next HBO special. And it's theme/title was I kinda like it when a lot of people die .
Then came 9/11/01 a few weeks later ..........did he keep that theme when his show aired ?? You tell me.... b.b
