The Day Richard Left Us
I was putting the lights on my fresh Christmas tree that year, enjoying the aroma, when my brother called. In a very quiet voice he said "You better put CNN on, I'm sorry Ox (my nickname), Richard Pryor is gone. I'm so sorry." I just moaned like an injured animal, froze, lights in hand and cried, but was happy he no longer had to be in pain, and grateful for having been blessed with his humor, his dignity and love for his people, the ability he had to take even the largest tragedies of his own life and make them hysterical. I could actually picture him in the middle of his heart attack, already spinning it into laughter in that beautiful head of his. And on that day I knew there would NEVER be anyone like him, same as I know no one will ever play guitar like Jimi. Well, good night for real everyone. God bless.
