Students mistreated animals, lawsuit says
By RENEE WINKLER
Courier-Post Staff
CAMDEN
The New Jersey SPCA has sued Camden County College and the operators of a
Gloucester Township animal shelter, claiming students illegally practiced
invasive medical procedures on shelter dogs.
The complaint, filed Thursday, alleges students in a two-year veterinary
technician program performed procedures including urinary catheterizations on
animals before they were euthanized.
During the procedure, the lawsuit says, the dogs sometimes were inadequately
anesthetized. The procedures took place between April and July 2000, [Note:
2002] according to the suit.
Individual defendants include the Humane Society of Southern New Jersey,
which has a contract through August to operate the animal shelter on
Barnsboro-County House Road; Peggy Dorsey, director of the veterinary technician program
and a trustee of the humane society, and unnamed individuals and corporations.
Richard Perr, an attorney who is chairman of the Humane Society of Southern
New Jersey, said Friday the allegations are baseless.

To the Editor:
I'm reading with great interest the shocking story in the Courier-Post
regarding the SPCA's cruelty case against the Camden County College and Animal
Shelter.
It's unbelievable to me, and my friends and neighbors, that such atrocities
occur
in animal shelters and that an institution of higher learning would have such
disregard for the law. How outragous. Truly the ultimate betrayal of trust,
in all regards.
Thankfully, New Jersey has the power to bring about justice.
My heartfelt thanks to Compassion for Camden, a volunteer group who uncovered
these crimes, and my highest regards to the professionals at the NJ SPCA.

Jennifer,
This reminds me of when I took a cat that I had, about 8 years ago, to a vet here in St.Augustine, Florida to be neutered. I assume its a routine procedure. He had the procedure done in the morning and I took him home that evening. He died about 3 hours later. I took his remains to another vet and they did an autopsy. They blood vessels were not tied off!! He bleed to death! Right after that I found out that he had students doing the procudure! My poor kitty died because the vet wanted to make more money! UUGG whats wrong with people!!
