Black Comedy...

Post by Robbie »

Hey, It's Robbie, I've been away for a minute. I just worked on a indepenant film Called "Black President" starring my friend Eddie Griffin as the Prez. And I've been doing gigs here and there. I'm slated to be in Korea and Japan performing at the end of june til july 1st. I've been there before.

Now being that black comedy is so popular now than ever...that's not true. Redd Foxx had a comedy room on western ave in L.A., and it was on the darker side of town but lot's of whites and other races came in to listen and laugh. If your a white comic looking to be funny, do black rooms. These rooms know funny and will let you know if you shit ain't workin. Trust me many have walked off stage with there tail between there leggs. Black audiences are tough because they won't take any ole bullshit. And you have to stepp up your game. Gareth, has came to the club I work at regularly for the past 3 monday's and he got a chance to see how white comic fair at a all black club. Even comics with a little T.V. under their belt. The main objective is to be funny, creative and ORIGINAL. I say that to let you know if you come to my club we'll call you out. If you stay original and cleaver people will come to see you, and you'll gain a fan base. In the past i've given advice. but I'm a working comedian and I can tell you what works. Dave Attell was a open mic comic at the comedy store and he was horrible, but someone saw his potential and gave him a shot. Jay Leno used to mc at the Tropicana Strip club, Dave Letterman and Jerry Seinfeld bombed every night on stage. And it took Seinfeld 4 years to shop his show. Larry David couldn't deliver his own material, but he's a great writer. What made the differance in these comics were, that they didn't give up. If this is what you want to do for the rest of your life then believe in yourself. Good Luck.

Gareth,

Tomorrow night is THE night B-) Man I'm SO EXCITED for you!! Let us know ASAP how everything went. I'm also very happy to hear you're building a friendship with Robbie. Gareth the friendships you build in Stand Up are unique to all the other friendships you've built in the past b/c you share a PASSION for something that no "civilian"--as Bill Marher refers to non-comics in his book True Story--can understand. It's a very strong bondB-)
Yet just another plus to this AWESOME God given GIFT!
ENJOY!!! ):)

Jennifer,

I agree 100%. Comedy is another manifestation of God's LOVE and there's NO color involved B-)

So Robbie do TELL what made you pick "Black Comedy" for a title?

Jennifer,
Hello again. I did make the mistake it was on La Brea, but that was a little before I started. Comedy just like love has no colors. As for Luchia's question. I chose Black comedy as the title, because of the other nationalities come and enjoy urban humor. And when I say urban humor I mean all races. When you listen to Richard Pryor, you hear humor not race, just one man's journey of life. You get the same from George Carlin. Laughter is universal, and so are assholes in every universe there's a few dying stars. Sorry I didn't know where I was going with that..

Talk to you all soon.

Robbie,

i dunno... i know what robbie meant when he said black comedy. sure, its colorless in a way... but at the same time, there are certain things that speak to people more than others.

ie: robbie does some comedy... if he makes a joke that everyone understands, but something a lot of black people go through, understand, and identify with... it could be considdered to be comedy geared more towards black people. it doesnt mean everyone else cant laugh and appreciate or enjoy it...

dont give the guy such a hard time... you know what he meant :D

however... we cant do white comedy... cause we get the shit whooped out of us  ;) just playin... calm down. lol
