Eddie Murphy
I miss Eddie doing stand up. After Raw, he went into acting full time. I love many of his movies. But he had "IT!"
Re: Eddie Murphy
mojones,
that's tha same thing I am saying...Eddie Murphy has had his time in tha spotlight...his biggest highlights are "Delirious, Raw, Coming to America, Nutty Professor part 1, Beverly Hill Cops parts 1 and 2" and a few others but Eddie Murphy is not like he use to be...
he is NO Richard Pryor, who is forever the King of Comedy...peace!

HaHaMyAss,
I agree with you totally. There is only one Richard Pryor. He virtually created stand up comedy. That's why everybody steal from him. Pryor defined the genre. Everyone concedes that. BTW, my favorite part of RAW is when Murphy imitates Richard Pryor. I love it when comics acknowledge the man!

mojones,
yeah-we loved the part when he actually lifts some of RIchard's material wholecloth...stealing is the sincerest form of flattery!
...oh well...at least now, and it is clearly my mission(one of them) to remind and to educate just where ALL the material that comics lift/steal and spin, came from---wheather derrivative or actually stolen....RICHARD PRYOR...

Jennifer,
This is probably more like a rhetorical question because I think I already know the answer. But didn't Murphy compensate RP at all for the use of his material? I hope he did, but suspects he didn't. I'm a comic myself and know that material is your "bread and butter."
It's amazing how much is stolen from Pryor. Boggles the mind. Just today I've heard Ricky Smiley and Bill Engvall both "appropriate" RP's stuff. Smiley in the Latham Entertainment Presents DVD takes the black funeral bit and Engvall from the Here's Your Sign CD paraphrases RP's discipline joke about the switches. What boils my blood is they don't acknowledge Pryor at all about it. But I guess that's the essence of thievery: stealing something and pretending it's your own. Depressing. I'm so sorry.
Today we have an entire generation of comics who steal from RP. Those who say they don't, steal from other comics who did.

Re: Eddie Murphy
mojones,
I think the lesson here is that stand up is generally better than movies. I love all these guys and think they all have something to contribute. I've gotta thank Jennifer for her dedication to restoring Mr. Pryor's legacy. Now if she could only do the same for, Bob Marley, MLK, and Huey P. Newton. It's a problem in our community--forgotten legacies.

Re: Eddie Murphy
mojones,
And have you seen Jamie Foxx's EXTREMELY derivative take on Africa during his most recent HBO special? He's obviously been watching Richard's "Live On Sunset Strip."

Re: Eddie Murphy
Reg_Man_98,
yeah, I've seen that Jamie Foxx standup routine...I think it was "I Might Need Security"...
and don't get me wrong...it was a funny routine but yeah, he did steal some of Pryor's jokes...tha one with his visit to Africa was just a horrible recycle of Richard's version...
sometimes, when I hear another comedian use another comedian's joke...it makes me mad...sometimes, they don't even acknowledge tha fact that it came from Richard Pryor..they just say tha joke in a way that it belong'd to them tha whole time...
Now, in Raw, when Eddie was doing his routine, his version was original and he said Richard Pryor's name before he even told a joke that might be showing reference to him...
like when he said, Richard Pryor call'd my house and said, "...tha next time that muthafukka call, tell him to suck MY dick.."
that was funny...but anyway...comedians can tell another comedian's joke but at least acknowledge where you got tha joke from...or just simply be ORIGINAL, come up with your own shit!
I am a comedian myself and I can come up with original material without hesitation and I don't know why these up-coming comedians can't do tha same thing...and stop using Richard Pryor as a way to get your foot in tha door...
Richard Pryor pave tha way and open'd tha door but I don't think he wanted people to use his jokes as a way to make it big...
I guess what I just said made sense...if not...oh well, Kiss my ass....
