UK Comics put Richard in their Top 10
I reckon if you take out the dead guys and the wankers, Richard's only competition is John Cleese.

lithium121,
Hello my friend!!Welcome to the sight!!
I have never heard of Eric Morecambe, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer I can't recall ever seeing Peter Cook perform but this list has got me curious. Then again the UK likes a different brand o humor than the US.

I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me!

Hi bingolong,
Thanks for the hello. Yep, we sure do like different stuff, Mike Myers Austin Powers stuff is very english humor for sure. Eric Morcambe is long gone and was part of a tv double act, gentle jokes for families at 7pm on a Saturday. Vic & Bob are a current act, very much liked by the University student lot a few years back, mad humor and crazy visual gags.
Most UK TV stuff on at the moment takes a while to get into, maybe two or three shows before you can understand the joke - for some reason we like our humour not to be readily accessible. So there's clever stuff out there, but it's like you have to be in the gang to get it.
This is a list by comics, I'm not sure that Richard would have been so high up on a list by the general public, but then I think only Cleese, Morecambe and Vic and Bob would have, lists by the public tend to lean toward current artists, people who in 10 years no one will give a fuck about. We do have a great tradition in stand up and there's plenty of US comics that come here and do well.
Personally, I love Richard's stuff, but over here he was known for his films first I guess. The album's were played by kids in their bedrooms, turned down a little so mummy couldn't hear him say motherfucka. Now those kids are like me, white middle class England!!
I was so surprised to find this website with such an active board run in this way by Jen that I had to sign up immediately.
My respect goes out to the users of this board, you all seem so honest, human and caring.
See you motherfuckas later.

lithium121,
Motherfucker? Only an Englishman would spell muthafucker correctly! Seriously, though, welcome to the sight. I'm not the least bit surprised about Pryor making the list. After all, he's the best. English comedy does take some getting used to. I'm just now beginning to appreciate Eddie Izzard.

mojones,
Only americans could write sight and not site? :p
The latest comedy craze over here is a tv sketch show called "Little Britain". Very funny stuff, takes a while to get into, but is good piss take on what everyday Brits are like....dunno your chances on seeing it, the BBC does broadcast on Satelite in US.

Re: UK Comics put Richard in their Top 10
dumbass,
You're right of course, the lack of Peter Sellers in the top 10 surprises me. One of the funniest guys of all time, natural stupid boyish humour with his silly voices and perfect timing, my Dad talks about The Goon Show with a wistful tear in his eye.
There's some comedians where you know, that without fail, they will make you laugh 'til you piss yourself, for me that would be Richard, Eddie M, Rowan Atkinson's stuff written by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis (before he started writing crappy love movies for that twat Hugh Grant) and French & Saunders stuff.
I'm afraid Redd Foxx is someone who had virtually no exposure in the UK, so I'm just not familiar with his stuff. All I know is that Sanford & Son format was sold to the US after the success in the UK of Steptoe & Son, one of few shows where that jumped the Atlantic successfully.
Thanks for the warm welcome, my education continues, here's to more chats with all you mothafuckas (spelling tips noted thanks Mojones)

funkychicken,
Only two? Come on, man! If you wanted to keep it in single digits, I would've said three: 1) Lenny Bruce, 2) George Carlin, and 3) RICHARD PRYOR. Of course, not necessarily in that order. But then again, comedy is subjective. There's so many types of funny. Peter Sellers was hilarious and you'll see how great he was when the remake of the Pink Panther comes out. Sure to bomb.
Though I loved Benny Hill as a kid, I suspect most of that had to do with the nudity on his show. Hey, I was an amorous kid. My first crush was on the pantyhose manneqin at Victorias Secret. But I digress. And yeah, I misspelled sight because I wanted to be consistent....
