Re: Mr. Flanagan
NickFlanagan,
is who I am. Also, I just found out the seattle show is in the afternoon at the Sunset Tavern in an area called Ballard. Which I guess leaves my night free to either party or do more comedy. Perhaps I could do comedy at a party?

SweetLuchia,
The reason why it's not THE BEST in the country is that it breeds a different kind of comedy. West coast comedy and East Coast comedy are a bit different. Subtle differences, but different none the less. Like I wouldn't put Greg Behrendt and Dave Attell in the same catagory. They are both good in there styles.
That's like saying Seattle is the best place for music in the country. At the same time you could argue Nashville was. You'd have to say the city is the best for Grunge or Country. And the comedy cities are no different.
New York IS the best in it's brand of humor. No doubt! I have nothing but respect for it and at the same time I fear it because of it's reputation. But one day...I'll have to conquer it... ]o)
I hope that answer is a bit to your liking...I don't want to offend you and your city!

jane_haze,
No your answer doesn't offend me at all b/c I know it's wrong.
When it comes to Straight Stand Up which is the foundation for ALL stand up, NYC is THE BEST in the country hands down.
You're still very new to the game so I'll let you find out for yourself.
And please don't be afraid of NYC this "reputation" you speak of only applies to posers, material stealers and people who think they're funny when they're really not. That's yet another great aspect of this city it weeds out the wanna bes with a QUICKNESS![Devil ]:o)](./images/smilies/lildevil.gif)

NickFlanagan,
THANK YOU for your kind words! It's great to BE back
And yes NYC is THE shit when it comes to Stand Up not just b/c of the variety but the legistics.
You can do 3, 4 even 5 sets a NIGHT if you want to b/c there are more places to perform HERE than anywhere else in the country! Not only that, the venues in which you perform are all SO close together & easy to get to.
The comics I know out in CA have to drive to get from one club to the next and once they do, they may not even get any stagetime b/c the place is flooded with ACTORS who can't get work...FUCK THAT!
I did 4 sets tonight
That's UNheard of for an unsigned comic!
Thus yet another reason why NYC produces the best of the best! There are a million and one places to WOODSHED and hone your skills
Your homeland has produced some kickass comics too! Are there many venues to woodshed there or are they reserved for signed comics?

SweetLuchia,
Yeah, I have to agree with you about NYC--the sheer amount of places any type of comic can get stage time is great, and the amount of venues friendly to 'alt-comedy', or whatever the fuck dumbass name off the beaten track stuff is given, is huge. Jane Haze, I'm sure somebody like Greg B who you mentioned honed skills in NYC at the very least. I hear a lot about places like Seattle, Boston, SF & LA for comedy, but it sounds like the people from those scenes eventually all migrate to NY, if only for a spell. In my limited experience,it is totally a fertile place to be. Whatever the case--come to the daytime seattle show if you can! I'll try to put you on the 'get in free' list.
Luchia, As for your question about places to woodshed in Canada--Toronto is definitely a great place to be. Although to tour nationally, the only direct way is by being part of Yuk Yuk's, Canada's sole national comedy franchise. However, here in town there's an open mic or three every night, pre-booked gigs at least once a week, and spots at rock shows too. It's not easy to make dough here without being part of Yuk's, but it's possible, and there's lots of places to work on your stuff. I'm ready to leave though!

NickFlanagan,
I think all comedians go to NYC at sometime. I don't think you can get full respect without being to play the clubs up there.
But at the same time, a lot of those new york comedians go out to the left coast for similiar reasons of migrating to NYC.
NYC is home to a more slick comedian that talks about more topical stuff whereas the west seems more of a random observational comic.
This by no means is a rule because there are ALWAYS exceptions, especially in an argument (in a literary sense) that has very few definite boundaries.
But I maintain that there is not a single city that can hold the title of best stand up city. You can weedle down the results A LOT! but not a clear champion over the next place.

I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me!
Re: Mr. Flanagan
bingolong,
Nick Flanagan rocks? Is that the best you can do? I would've said something like, "NICK FLANAGAN YOU DA' MANAGAN!" Or Nick Flanagan recommended by Norman Cousins....

That would imply that he was a man for a second time. But if he was the man in the first place, stopped for a while and came back, then I could accept him being the man again.
