You're absolutely right. No book or course can teach you comedy. You just have to do it. The primary benefit of a book is it gives you enough of a false sense of security to get you onstage. Other than that, you can learn just as much from just watching other comedians. Eventually you'll notice certain patterns and begin to incorporate them into your own set.
If you can't find a good room, there's always a bar or something who would love to have you. Of course, it helps if you are as aesthetically pleasing as Luchia. But its not mandatory...
