Jeni & Shang?

Post by mojones »

Anybody catch Richard Jeni's special? Or has it aired yet? Anyway, I hear he focuses more on politics now. I'm not the least bit surprised either. In the Bill Hicks documentary, Jeni lamented the fact his sets weren't more politically substantive like Hicks. I always thought that eventually he would try to change that.

Speaking of politics and comedy, where is Shang Forbes? I haven't heard from him in awhile. Is he dong his poetry fulltime now or what? I like his poetry, but I'm a bigger fan of his stand up.

Jennifer,

Sorry, I'm just now responding. I logged off almost immediately after I left the original post. Shang is one of those NY comedians who's been everywhere and on everything. But somehow he remains under the radar. He has quite a bio: HBO's Aspen Comedy Festival Special, BET, Comedy Central's Comedy Cabaña and a regular commentator on Air America Radio’s Unfiltered.

Shang Forbes can tell a crotch joke with the best of them. But what sets him apart is his socio-political commentary. Not only does he champion abortion rights for women, but he castigates deadbeat dads, the Iraqi war, misogynist rap and the bling-bling culture. He's also an actor and poet. But his poetry is more slam than traditional. And I've never seen him onstage without his signature sweater cap. He has one cd "Shangry" that's been out for about 8 years. Funny stuff, but the material is a bit dated.

Jennifer,

He's doing the thing from [/i]Arrested Development[/i], where he goes around talking up his name...

JTF,
I saw Richard Jeni's show last night---i love it...thought he was original, and risky and political while being personal---really love him!

Jennifer,

I'm glad to hear it! Jeni already was one of the funniest men on the planet. Who can forget Platypus man? The bit, not the tv show. Anyway, I know he was worried about making the transition from just being funny to being politically relevant too. Nice to know he pulled it off without a hitch. I'll catch his show when it comes on....

mojones,

Does Shang just go by his first name only? I'm having trouble placing his face but if it is who I think it is...he's funny. Smart and funny.

Is he a light skinned brotha with a gote? Did I spell that right? If it is , I met him a few times and he's got mad skills in front of the camera. Plus, you're right, he's definitely under the radar. I like him though.
