astonamous,
And they ran it against "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley" when both shows were at their peak of popularity. AND they put it on at 8PM!
Richard told Ebony magazine back in '77: "(Television) could be such an informative medium. One week of truth on TV could just straighten out everything. One hundred and twenty-seven million people watch television every night; that's why they use it to sell stuff...They're not going to write shows about how to revolutionize American. The top-rated shows are for retarded people."
Just imagine if Richard had had cable TV as a viable outlet in those days. Not only would the show probably have flourished (like "The Chappelle Show"), but his stand-up performances would have probably been filmed a lot more often. (He would likely have been doing HBO specials like Chris Rock, George Carlin, and Dave Chappelle.) Damn. Oh, well... Our loss. As much as I know the albums "That Nigger's Crazy," "...Is It Something I Said?," and "Bicentennial Nigger" like the back of my hand, I would LOVE to see that stuff on video, which I'm sure would make them twice as funny. It's a tribute to Richard's genius that the material works brilliantly even without the visuals.

I thought Damon Wayans would be the break out star from the show - never saw Jim Carrey comin' - and now Jamie gets his shine!
