Jackson Jurors: One Knows Michael, Two Have Sex Offenders In Their Families And a few have more than just a passing familiarity with the law.
by Jennifer Vineyard
SANTA MARIA, California — Now that the Michael Jackson child-molestation case is in the hands of the jury, just who are the people deciding the singer's fate? And should he be worried?
Those potential jurors with any obvious prejudices pertaining to the matter were supposed to be weeded out during voir dire, which is the jury-selection process (see "The Jackson 12: Eight Women, Four Men To Decide Singer's Fate"), but the individuals ultimately chosen to serve on the panel do have a few interesting characteristics that could become factors during deliberations.
Three members have more than just a passing familiarity with the law. Juror #1 has taken some law classes. Two other jurors have spouses who've been on both sides of the law: Juror #10's husband has been arrested for drunk driving and drugs, while juror #12's ex-husband is a Santa Maria detective.
More telling is that two of the panelists have someone close to them who have committed or been accused of sex crimes. Juror #5 has a grandson who is registered as a sex offender, which could make her more lenient, while juror #8 has a brother-in-law who molested his nieces. That same juror's sister was also raped, at age 12 (see "The Jackson Jury: Does It Matter If You're Black Or White?").
While those jurors' familiarity with sex crimes might influence their opinion about Jackson, other jurors — specifically, jurors #2, #3, #8 and #12 — have something else in their backgrounds that might affect their level of sympathy for the alleged victim, a cancer survivor, in the case. Those four panelists have something in common — a history of cancer in their families.
Because Jackson and his Neverland Ranch play such a big role in defining the community, it's almost impossible to find people who've never heard of the singer in Santa Maria, but juror #11 actually knows Michael. His brother-in-law's sister works for the singer's doctor, and his sister and brother were invited to Neverland. Perhaps he's balanced out by juror #6, a 22-year-old who said during the selection process that Jackson is a "little before my time."
MTV News will have live coverage from Santa Maria on-air, online and in Overdrive when a verdict is handed down.
