Appaloosa,

You've hit the nail right on the head, Gene was just an actor and nothing more. There was no extra dimension to him. I haven't read the comments that he made about Richard, so I'm in no real position to pass an informed comment on them. But to me, Gene dissin' Richard is much like Joe Frazier dissin' Muhammad Ali.........nobody really cares, because we all KNOW who the Greatest was! but at least Frazier can claim to have been a champion once, while Gene will never have the word "great" placed anywhere near his name.

it's funny but i could never stand gene wilder and only really liked the stuff he did with richard and with mel brooks..... there's always been a kind of aura of smugness about him - that "twinkle" in his eye like he thinks his god's fucking gift - eurgh!!

bet he was really pleased with himself that he stretched himself to being a black man's friend.

Wilder Retracts Depp Criticism

Movie funnyman Gene Wilder has hailed Johnny Depp as a "magical" choice to play Willy Wonka in upcoming film Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - weeks after attacking Depp's casting in the movie remake. Wilder, who played Wonka in the original 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, recently accused director Tim Burton of remaking the Roald Dahl fantasy for "pointless" financial gain. And despite complaining Depp would not be able to improve upon his portrayal of Wonka, Wilder has now declared Depp is the perfect choice for the film. He says, "If I were going to cast the movie, I would cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka because I think he is wonderful. Mysterious - always - and magical."

I think Wilder had really thought that he had done the definitive Wonka.....an don't like the idea of another actor doing it......but now someone has talked to him an told him the best thing to do is be gracious about this.....an so what he says about Depp....who is very capable ....he actually thinks about himself.....that is why he is so smug...he thinks he is magical....an mysterious....Depp is....but I don't think Wilder is....to me now Wilder just seems to be a very confused individual
