I have been a Martin Lawrence fan since he was host of Def Jam. He was real good with audience interaction and also acting out his jokes. Of course his tv show was hilarious especially Romey Rome.
I like his comedy presence on stage but his actual jokes I can take or leave. He is one of those guys that could read the phonebook and make it funny.
I concur. Lawrence was great ad-libbing and with material others wrote for him on his show. But some of his prepared stand up stuff wasn't exactly stellar.
That Old Hippie Chick,
Never fear. He got banned from SNL after that show. I never liked his show but I can tell after all he's been through health wise that he's matured. I will say this though and some of you may agree or disagree but he's the closest thing to Richard on the big screen. I don't see anyone else able to do it. Certainly not Cedric, Bernie, Mike Epps or any of the others. It's just that I think Martin's past has put a bad taste in a lot of people's mouth.

chelcie3,
I like Martin's comedy......somewhat......it is okay....some of the time.....but still he is no where near Pryor....not even close.....some of these posts you might argue with.....but not this one.....sorry.....
Appaloosa,
I didn't say th' nigga' was a genius! But I am saying in comparison to what black comedians are on th BIG SCREEN...he has the some of the presence and energy that Richard has on screen. Can you say Cedric does? I say no. Bernie? Again, no. Hell Chris Rock doesn't even hold it as well as Martin on screen. Like I said...I'm no Martin fan but with the right movie I think he can do better than most of these guys that are in the movies now. How about this...If Wil Smith does this remake of Uptown Saturday Night...who would best play his partner? If for some ungodly reason they decided to do a remake of Which Way is up?...who do you see doing it? He can do several characters unlike many of the other cats I spoke of. C'mon...I don't expect everyone to agree with me but I think I made a good point.[/i]some[/i][/i]some[/i]

Comparing Martin Lawrence to Richard Pryor is like comparing BeetleJuice (Howard Stern's lackey) to Sidney Poitier! Yeah they may both be black and in the entertainment industry, but that's about it!
