Blue Collar Comics

Post by mojones »

I know this may get me barred from the hip comedians club, but I actually like the blue collar comics. Ron White, Larry, Engvall and Foxworthy can be hilarious at times. Thats what I like about humor. It's universal. I love Mr. Pryor, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Patrice O'Neal, George Lopez, Juan Villarreal and Carlos Mencia because we come from similar backgrounds. But I can also enjoy Dave Attel, Kilmartin, Judy Gold, Newhart, Oswalt and others who don't. Funny bridges gaps, erase barriers and bring us all closer together.

Back to the blue collar guys. I was listening to the Blue Collar Comedy Tour CD and thought Larry and Ron White had the best openers. Larry's bit about the world's largest margarita and White's joke about televangelist got the show off to a great start. What do you guys think?

mojones,
I like the Blue Collar guys especially Ron White the Tater, Larry the Cable Guy. I like the fact that they found their own people who like what they do.

mojones,
I like Ron white myself. And personally...I think the bridges help keep us funny to each other. If there were no bridges then we'd all be a bunch of assholes!

mojones,

Foxworthy is a pretty good comic. I've only heard a couple of Engall's routines and thought they were OK. Ron White I'm not familiar with.

As for Larry The Cable Guy... ugh. I watched some of his Comedy Central special and didn't find one thing funny about it. I'm sure someone who thinks Fox News is really fair and balanced thinks otherwise since that seems to be his actual audience - people who don't know any better.

cjmarsicano,I have to admit it was funny seeing Larry the cable guy bomb on the Jeff Foxworthy roast..the crowd wasn't into him....but hey, he found a gimmic to get over..so even though I personally don't find him funny for the most part..I can't hate on any comic that found a way to get over, too many of us are struggling, it makes me happy to see some of us getting paid.

Murphdogg, I don't disagree with you there. That having been said, I would have loved to watch him bomb on that Foxworthy roast.

I'm not a comedian (although I did write some shit for a local comedy radio program about 12 years ago), but I am so tempted to want to do a character in answer to Larry The Cable Guy...

Ralph The Satellite Man! The total antethisis of Larry The Cable Guy.

Murphdogg,

For some reason I'm not a huge fan of this sudden redneck popularity, everybody had pretty much forgot about "Hee Haw" on t.v. and now this. :)
Everytime I hear "you might be a redneck if.." I think of the outdoor garden spigot we had for a shower head and I want to hold that person underwater till they quit bubblin, which is exactly what we do to "cable guys". I guess I'm just pissed cause his new catch phrase is something I have to try not to say anymore, I was glad when grunge went out of style too because I could start dressing normal again. ;)

Murphdogg,

I agree. The Cable Guy found a great gimmick to get over and he's using it. I have no problem with it. Considering the audience, his material could be so much worse! He's essentially an old school comic in redneck clothing. Spouting one liners with a country accent. Comedically, he's the equivalent of a character actor. His name isnt' even Larry. If you ever meet him, you'll see he's not a bad guy.

As surprisingly enough, Foxworthy has the best selling comedy CD of all time! Of course that had more to do with marketing than anything else. But I give him his props. He's a good comedian. He still does the redneck stuff, but it's his claim to fame. I don't expect him to leave it out.

My personal favorite of the blue collar bunch is Ron White. I love his bit on Robert Tilton the televangelist. After you experience stand up for awhile, you begin to notice patterns and formulas for jokes. But it takes a good comedian to make you laugh even when you see the punch coming. Ron White does that very well.

mojones,

I remember Robert Tilton. That guy was comedy in itself. Frank Zappa did quite a few pages in his autobiography where he ripped on the guy.
