robfharris,

I cried then too, but happy tears seeing Sista Maya, esp. when she said "Gurlll" because that one word means so much in sistah hood. :) but I also bawled when I saw FOUR presidents walk in. FOUR!!! that alone was a powerful statement.

then the tears began flowing hard when Sen. Kennedy spoke. when he goes, I remember my brother (Pres. Kennedy) called Coretta and offered to do anything he could to help her. then my brother Robert called the judge to get King freed from a 4-month sentence at a prison camp for a minor traffic offense. THAT ALONE was powerful and moving. not to mention priceless! ):)

tamra,
There's been a long standing rumor that John F. Kennedy, didn't really fall into line with the Civil Rights movement until he met Coretta Scott King. If he was attracted to her or if she gave a depth to the movement that he could relate to we'll never know, but we owe a lot to her presence.

Why has CNN and MSNBC decided to only cut to the funeral when someone is singing. I would expect that from BET, but not the news networks. C-Span is the saving grace today so I can give CNN a pass, but I haven't seen much coverage on FOX news at all.
Now that Johnnie's gone, I guess I should start being nice to the cops.

robfharris,

it was free on Yahoo. sorry, I should have said something. it was free, completely uncut, etc. entirely live on Yahoo w/about a 2 minute delay. so you got to see some stuff twice.

yeah Pres. Kennedy wasn't really concerned about civil rights. then again which presidents ever really did prior to the 60s? can't really say Lincoln freed slaves, because a new hell was created right after slavery and lasted until Dr. King. only when things started making national attention did he begin to do something and I also think advice from Jackie O may have played a role in this as well. Jackie seemed to be most concerned about their kids safety after the bombings.

tamra,
Lincoln only freed the slaves in the hopes that they would join the military and help fight. He was right, he was also quoted as saying he wished he didn't have to do it.
President Kennedy provided a lot of legal support to the movement, but President Lyndon Johnson signed the laws and forced Hoover's hand to put the FBI into action.
LBJ is an extremely underated president, due to the failures in Vietnam, but many of his social agendas are still providing assistance to people today.

Yeah, the bombings were the end. If you've never had the chance go to the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham. The church that was bombed is across the street, even though it has been repaired you can tell the force of the bomb. There is a house next door that was damaged, and they never repaired the sidewalk, it is still raised from the force of the bomb. That's what gets me about Condeleeza Rice's non-chalantness towards racial issues, considering she went to school, lived on the same block, and was a friend of two of the girls killed. I'm not saying be "Condy X", but damn seem like you give a shit.

robfharris,

but that's what I meant about presidents *before* the 60s. not much of an effort was made towards improving conditions for blacks. when Lincoln "freed" them nothing was set in place for their well being, he freed them into the hands of the Klan which was formed right after the civil war ended, and many klansmen were members of public office. then Andrew Johnson comes along and reverses policies set in place by Gen. Sherman for blacks to provide land ownership to start building their own economy.

Pres. Lyndon Johnson made the most significant efforts, because he himself was harassed w/his family by the KKK as a child. so it was more than personal for him to do something about the hatred.
