Man with 700 snakes arrested at airport

POSTED: 11:21 a.m. EDT, May 24, 2007

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Customs officers at Cairo's airport have detained a man bound for Saudi Arabia who was trying to smuggle 700 live snakes on a plane, airport authorities said.

The officers were stunned when a passenger, identified as Yahia Rahim Tulba, told them his carryon bag contained live snakes after he was asked to open it.

Tulba opened his bag to show the snakes to the police and asked the officers, who held a safe distance, not to come close. Among the various snakes, hidden in small cloth sacks, were two poisonous cobras, authorities said.

The Egyptian said he had hoped to sell the snakes in Saudi Arabia. Police confiscated the snakes and turned Tulba over to the prosecutor's office, accusing him of violating export laws and endangering the lives of other passengers.

According to the customs officials, Tulba claimed the snakes are wanted by Saudis who display them in glass jars in shops, keep them as pets or sell them to research centers.

The value of the snakes was not immediately known.[/font]

tamra,
if I was on that plane there would be one of those bugs bunny/willy coyote body shaped exit holes through the side.

scared of heights and I don't like snakes so it would have to be snakes on a bus before that happened. ;p

tamra,
Lovely story just after my wife booked us to fly to Cancun. I quess I would have to turn the snakes into pets and take them off the plane safely and put them in a cage and bring them with me while I was drinking off the jettlagg. There should not have been a movie like that because it will give the shitheads an idea on how to attack American passanger planes. I believe in freedom of speach and I wish people would think of the saftey and well being of others before they speak their minds. Cheers!

hellifiknow,

  and my body shaped hole would have been right next to yours.

EddieHill,

with all our fancy security, you can't even pack extra underwear, let alone snakes. I'm just trying to figure out where the snakes were gonna go? cargo? which isn't even safe for dogs and cats.

they should have just locked his dumb ass in a room w/all those snakes for a few hours
