Re: Your most recent comedy set

SweetLuchia, I had a "normal" childhood, but you know how it is...even a 'normal childhood' has moments of fucked-upness that can have a weird effect on one's life.
That being said, I was lucky to be born to two intelligent, hard-working, caring parents, who have great video, music and book collections.
As for the comedy style...it's kind of observational, definitely absurd, a little cynical, but also a little naive.
I feel more at this point like a joke-teller than a weaver of tales, but I'm definitely influenced by both confessional and observational comedians. How about you? I'm sure you've mentioned it's confessional before, but what is your style like exactly?
And I would also love a return to the film reviews!

NickFlanagan,

My childhood was anything but normal. My Pop wasn't around and my brother was a drug dealer, so there were always strange people coming in and going out at all hours of the day and night bringing all the fucked up reasons WHY they got high with them b.b

This is why I study the MASTER he took all those fucked up people who came in and out of his grandmother's brothel and used them to tell a story. Turned all that pain into ART in away that hasn't been done before or since!

That being said, yes I am very much a confessional comic and I'm also a very angry one :X

NickFlanagan,

P.S. I'm glad you liked RP's movie reviews too ;)

Check out the one Jenny just posted in the "Latest News" forum.

SweetLuchia, I can see why you identify with RP!
I never really had high people hanging around me when I was young, or at least I wasn't aware if they were high. We had a dude who lived in our basement who may have done drugs, but he was a minor figure in my life.
When did you realise you wanted to do comedy?

NickFlanagan,

Thank You for understanding my strong identification with THE Greatest Comedian of ALL time. That means A LOT to me ):) :-x

As for when I realized I actually wanted to be a comedienne, at 19.

I heard Mr. Pryor for the first time at 13 and a half but it wasn't until I reached the age of 19 that God put the desire in my heart to perform.

What about you honey, how old were you when you realized you wanted to be a comedian?

SweetLuchia,

I wrote a longer response but it was lost because I always forget to log in first. Anyway, I guess I always wanted to do comedy because the earliest people I liked when I was young were comedians--I hadn't seen their acts, but Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray and a few others had this certain appeal that made me wish I had what they did.
I did my first comedy set when I was twenty. It wasn't a hard jump because I'd been singing in bands for awhile, but since I'm no Luciano Pavarotti or daresay Jose Carreras, the performance element was always just as, if not more important than the singing itself.
It's been almost four years since the first set and I'm just starting to get an idea of the possibilities and pitfalls of a life in standup.

SweetLuchia,

SO you only realized you wanted to do comedy a couple of years ago, huh?

Thought I'd do another little comedy report. On monday I did time at a bar called the Rivoli for a night here in Toronto called the Alt dot Comedy Lounge. It's night booked long in advance, and I rarely get a chance to perform there, so I was obviously looking forward to it. I was getting nervous though, because the crowd seemed to tense up thoroughly at the mention of anything resembling a controversial topic. This made me a bit worried because my material can be harsh-ish(not to be confused with hashish, but possibly confuseable with hackish).
Anyway, I was scheduled second to last of the night, and it seemed like they booked me at the right time, because my stuff went over. It went well. Yay! At least I thought it did, but then I got thrown off when after the set this dude walked up to me, extends his hand and shakes mine, and says 'Congratulations! Was that your first set?'
Well, it WAS my first set tonight...but I think he may have meant that I seemed like a first-timer. He went on to tell me that he was planning on doing stand-up, and when I asked him when he planned to do it, he said 'in six months'.
Maybe it's just moi, but I didn't really have a preparatory period of time before doing my first set...it just kinda happened. How long did some of yall comics take in preparing your set before your first stage appearance?

One of the things was happy about regarding that set was when I began my act, somebody laughed at my tone of voice, and that's the first time I've noticed drawing a chuckle due to my voice, and it made me feel alright.

Then last night I did some comedy at a rock show with these two good local bands called The Patients and The Mark Inside, and although I was unfocused and sloppy, it went
fine, although I didn't do as much new shit as I maybe should have. The response was mixed, but better than the last show I played with the Patients, where I MC'd and was booed off the stage two out of the three times I got up there. I got yelled at a few times, but not enough to drown out my words, and that's the important thing, I guess.

The next day I woke up early to go to this recently acquired drink/food server job, and the boss called me to tell me he was letting me go. I guess I'm a shitty bartender/server. Is there anybody else in this e-community who sucks at most jobs???
As long as I know I'm not alone in being bad at setting tables and holding trays, I'll feel better about life.

Hope this BS was worth reading.

sincerely,
Flans

Back again with more tales of laughmakery. So I did two sets this week; I'm trying to establish that as my average and surpass it as much as possible. You know the saying--'stage time, stage time, stage time'(or maybe it's just 'stage time!', I don't know)...
Anyway, on wednesday I played at this open mic at a basement club called "Zurf City". What the hell kind of name is that shit?!? Is Zurf a word? Can somebody tell me what Zurf means?Daria, is it Australian?
I guess the last time I'd played there, I'd had one of those sets where nobody laughs, and people treat what I'm saying as if I'm serious, even though I'm clearly not, considering I'm onstage telling goddam jokes. When people aren't laughing I try not to let it bother me, though, because I'm still saying what I find funny, and thus still entertaining myself, so I'm a happy dude. I try not to blame the audience. To make a long story short, I basically did what I've been doing for the past little while, which is do half of a 7 minute set with material written over the last couple of weeks, and the other half new material. It went great--I guess it was just balancing out the time it did shitty. The crowd was with me at the beginning, and even though I fucked up my first joke(hard to do when reading from a book, but I managed to do it! Yay!), I managed to recover it and people stayed with me.
Then yesterday I did a set that was some stuff from the wednesday, a couple of older Gypsy-related gags, and a new intro bit. Again, it went well! The crowd was so stoked on my jokes that I almost felt corny. I'm not sure what I learned about my set this week, but I think I at least have a few new jokes. At least this week I have a show where I'll make thirty bucks, opening for Seattle band The Catheters. What a painful name for a band! Hiyoo!

Thanks for listening, yall. Pryor 4 Life! Anybody else wanna tell a set story?
