Re: I'm having one of those days

smjmcomic,
Why is it that comics always feel that they can get away with 100% new. I always go to a gig ready to do my tried and true stuff, maybe sandwich one or two new jokes in between the killer material and then finish up strong. I have seen guys and gals do this suicide thing where they go up there with all new stuff, bomb and then can't understand why. I think it is great that you are trying new stuff but that is a lot of pressure for it to all be new no matter how much "you" love it and want to try it out. God forbid that is the one night that opportunity knocks and someone is watching you that could completly change your comedy career and if you do all new stuff that you are not confident with that person walks out thinking, "man what was that?" Do your best stuff always. My rule of thumb is, "This is a room full of people who have never seen or heard me before. When they leave they will be saying in the car, 'man that chick was funny'" and that is that. Sorry if I got a bit preachy but the comedy is my passion baby. :-x

Daria,

Yes I totaly get what your saying I have a few reason's why I'm doing a whole new set

1.I'm bored as hell with the old stuff

2.Its my 2nd time in 3 weeks playing at the same venue

3.I want a challenge.

smjmcomic,

Well, I think there's no harm in doing any joke once. Sometimes things work. Then again, I'm fairly tasteless.
I'd say that you should write it until it's airtight and then try it. A well-written tasteless joke can definitely get a pass more easily than an ignant-ass one. Not that I know shit.:-)

smjmcomic,
I understand your reasons but if your stuff is killer the people won't care if you do it again. Besides its a whole new crowd. I do the same material weekly at one of my gigs and I always feel sorry for the bar staff who could do mine and a heap of other comics material at this point. But when I ask them about it they are like, "man as long as it is funny, anything is better than the rock and roll cover bands." So it is really up to you and how you are going to present your old stuff to make it fresh. Ask Jennifer Pryor about it, she knows what it took for Richard to get his shit tight and it wasn't trying out new stuff just because he was bored. Step up. You can do it. As long as it is original, funny and passionate people will respond.

Daria,

Well I have spent most of yesterday and most of today fine tooning my new set and I'm verry proud of it. Writting this new set has been a blast I can't remember the last time I have had this much fun writting. I could care less if the peole think its funny I know it is. Most people in LA are clone's they don't know whats funny they want to hear the same lame fucking jokes you hear on Comedy Central every Friday Night and I aint about to sellout.

As a artist I'm at a point where I wanna challenge myself and step my game up.
