Mo'Nique & Fat Beauty Pageant

Post by mojones »

Is this a hoax or what? Is comedienne Mo'Nique really hosting a beauty pageant for the obese? A Beauty Contest For Fat People? Naw, its just too easy.

I'm kinda ambivalent on this one. I understand what's she going for...but isn't the whole point of a beauty pageant is to see people who are exceptionally attractive? Most people watch tv for escapism....I dunno. I guess if it makes people feel better, it's a good idea.

mojones,
I'm not physically attracted to big women (not being hateful, just being honest) but that doesn't mean that a big woman cannot be "exceptionally beautiful". If this contest is on the real, I hope they do it with a hint of class. Not some "big sista'" kind of thing. Just show what truly makes a woman or human being "exceptionally beautiful".

chelcie3,

I always thought beauty was about symmetry, not size. We all know gorgeous people who are overweight. But they're generally curvaceous women. The term, "thick" immediately comes to mind. In the hood, it's used to connote someone attractive and bubbly who can't fit into a size 6. But Mo'Nique's show actually has fat in the title. That makes it sound like a joke. Who're the sponsors? Anne Taylor and Dress Barn? How do you judge a contest like that anyway? "Hey you, the girl with one chin -- you're disqualified!" I hope the show proves to be a classy affair. Personally, I would kill for a date with Tocarra -- the thick girl on America's Top Model who was kicked off the show..

Fat is just a word; a description.

Beauty is not denooted by size but really by character and personality, surely?

If you're not attracted to fat women, that's fine, everyone has their taste. I'm not into fat men, very thin men or ginger, bearded, bald, black/chinese/indian men. Not to say that I would never be, but sure, that's just my taste. Whether they're attractive or not has nothing to do with it. I could list here, without hesitating guys in each of those types that I think are attractive-looking. By the same token I'm sure I could list guys not officially "attractive" but have something very sexy about them. I certainly wouldn't hate them or put them down for it!

To say someone is ugly because they're fat is a stupid, out-dated and prejudiced thing to say. So if they lost all the weight would they suddenly be beautiful? It's a dangerous attitude that has women all over the world suffering with eating disorders, me included.

I don't think people understand eating disorders well enough, we've all heard of bulimia and anorexia and whilst they have very pretty names, food addiction does not, but it's just as deadly and as we all know is quickly becoming a pandemic. As a smoker or drinker or drug user, you can give them up "just like that", because you don't need them to live (theoretically of course, I realise that psychologically it's a different matter). With food addiction, you can't just say, okay, well, I won't buy food any more.

Well that's as in-depth I'm going to get on that here....my point was that I was going to express my shock at programmes like "The Swan", which do nothing to bring the right attitudes into the 21st century. They entice and encourage people to slice themselves to pieces so that they can feel accepted by society, when really nothing was wrong with them in the first place except low self-esteem. These women should have been encouraged to believe that they're not worthless, they have a place in society, help them achieve a sense of self-value and remind them that they're in perfect health. It's corny to say this but it's pretty fucking selfish when you compare it to the poverty and suffering in other countries, most of Africa to name just one continent.

To rub it in, the hostess says at the end, "right, you've been judged on beauty, poise and overall change"....something like that. So you've mutilated these women to homogenise them into what the media says they should look like and to look like each other and you're still going to judge them on "beauty"?!?!? What the fuck...?!

Fuck that. I don't ever want surgery unless my life depends on it.

America seems to be obsessed with the pursuit of youth and thin-ness, as if that what makes you beautiful. Because of the US film and TV industry, the rest of the world are, to some extent, conditioned to this too - and the media are the worst to blame for exacerbating it.

Can you believe I read the other day that M-K Olsen is too thin and Liz Hurley is too fat?!?! Fuck me, will someone tell me what weight I'm meant to be?!?!

I don't buy into all that shit, because I am stubborn, and different and because I have a brain. Unfortunately I do work in the acting and performing industry and I've seen the looks over talent get worse and worse over the last 20 years. Sizism seems to be the last realm that isn't PC.

PS shit, sorry for such a long post; this is just another thing i get on my soap-box about! ]:o( ]:o(

clairus99,

Fat is just a word? A description? Maybe but it's considered an insult. Why not call it full figured or something like that? But I won't quibble. I never meant to imply "fat" women were automatically unattractive. You know better than that. I did, however, take a couple of cheap shots...but Im' a frustrated comedian...what do you expect?

mojones, no i think i read your post okay - i didn't take offence by it, but i can see why you thought that.

The point is, call it what you want, fat is what it is and it shouldn't be an insult. it's a description. i think calling it anything else, whether well intentioned or not, is like saying, "i don't want to offend you by calling you fat, so i'll call you something else that means fat". i think that is insulting. i mean, i don't get angry about it, if anything i kind of laugh to myself.

i realise i'm in the minority thinking about the word FAT the way i do, but fat people shouldn't take it as an insult. If someone ever makes a comment about me being fat, i'm like, "yeah, so? congratulations on passing the fucking eye test! how about trying triangles for your next fucking shape?!"

;p

i'm glad you admitted you took a couple of cheap shots. i hope you will not mind me saying that, sincerely, i really do think that when comics start having a go at people because they're fat (amongst other similar prejudices), then they really have run out of interesting things to say. i really do. it's time to get a "real job" then.

i went to a "comedy" night once....shit, it was full of middle-class, uni types, and apart from being full of crap anyway (one bloke invited everyone to heckle him, claiming to have an answer for everything. All I said was, "give up and get a proper job" - and he looked genuinely hurt and speechless! god, he should get me when i really mean it!) anyway....i'm getting off the point. there's a minor-celebrity this one girl said that she hated, for no other reason than she was fat. So I sat there and glared at her with my, "you just met your murderer" look and she quickly went off the topic, although her friends found her hilarious.

Woah, look out Dorothy Parker!

Funny, I didn't see her around afterwards.

I don't know if you know French and Saunders in the US (I know you know Jennifer Saunders of Absolutely Fabulous) - well Dawn French is a big girl and they did this excellent sketch where Dawn has travelled and has written this really interesting book. Jen interviews her on the radio and constantly makes references to her size, using any other word but FAT. They were completely pointless references, and an extremely well-written sketch. I saw that and I changed my view immediately.

I didn't want to say this before but I guess it's obvious that I'm a big girl myself! :-x

clairus99,
Yeah I am attracted to what ever get my dick hard, fat skinny thick volupturous, that shit don't matter!!!In this case more cushion for the pushing!!! I just love women!!!!

[/i]NOTE: The above was not in anyway a slight to women of any shape but actually away of saying sometimes I don't know what I am going to be attracted to so I never say never to any woman of any body type ;my dick has a mind of it's on.Now for more serious discussion read below[/i]

The problem is really society.Sometimes on Maury they have these show segments called "opposites attract". They will have a thin guy who is in love with an overweight woman and when the crowds sees this they make it a spectacle of it!! That shit don't matter as long as you our a happy person!!

Hell my little sister is a little overweight but she is just as attractive as her big bro ;p and I hope that in life being overweight does not ever prevent her from being happy......Okay I know that already being overweight does make her and pretty much any woman unhappy but I think this show with Monique will be perfect for those who appreciate woman like this and hopefully help woman who have a disposition with being overweight.. :)
