US military plane crashes at base

A US Air Force cargo plane carrying 17 people has crashed near a base in the north-eastern US state of Delaware.
A number of people were injured but there were no fatalities, a spokesman for the Dover Air Force base said.

The C-5 plane developed problems on take-off as it headed for the Ramstein base in Germany, the Pentagon said.

TV pictures showed the C-5, the US military's largest plane, with its cockpit and tail separated from the fuselage and a wing shattered.

Walking wounded

The crash occurred at about 0645 local time (1045 GMT). No major weather hazards were reported.

A spokeswoman for a local health facility, BayHealth, said it had received 10 people from the crash, some of them walking wounded. There were no exact details on the conditions of the injured.
A spokesman for the base said an Air Force board would investigate the crash.

Dover operates the largest freight terminal of the defence department and has more than 4,000 military and civilian employees.

It also receives the bodies of the nation's war dead.

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy first came into operation in the US military in 1970 and can fly non-stop for 2,500 miles (4,000km) carrying a load.

JTF,

I know that pic is amazing, and amazing that all 17 survived. you should check out the simulation of the crash sometime today on CNN. makes it even more amazing. I know some of the passengers probably kissed the ground after existing the plane.

we need that pilot on commercial airlines quickly  because that could have played out differently under someone else's experience.

deepseas,

so these are the same types of planes? either way does make you wonder given the amount of fuel that was involved???

or that was one helluva landing? would be interesting to hear what a 3rd party source who understands the technology has to say about both. that could blow the lid off, yanno.

and wouldn't that make this day even more better to expose what really happened on 9/11 in NYC. :)

deepseas,

but this is trippy as to why this one didn't explode immediately vs the planes that hit the WTC.

I always thought airlines used cheaper equipment for higher profits. and that military planes were held to a higher standard for several reasons. who knows.. my only concern when it comes to planes is land this mofo after I get on one

tamra,

There isn't any difference in the type of plane or the type of fuel. Look at the military plane...see the windows in the cockpit? That gives you an idea of how big this plane is and just how much fuel it had to have been carrying.

What happens when a plane crash lands? Does it immediately explode? Does there have to be some kind of spark from friction? Wouldn't the fuel burn very hot and very fast or would it continue to burn for days?

Remember the old charcoal grills? You added some lighter fluid to start it and your dad would squirt that shit till the can was empty and throw a match on it and there would be this huge whoooosh of flames. After a few minutes or less there would be no more flames and your dad would be starting all over again.

Visitor,

I'm still thinking about the new footage from 9/11 I saw the other day. I can't get it out of my mind. that would be pretty sad and a definite invitation to hell if it's what I think it is.

I did see a lot of helicopters around the WTC after the initial attacks, but they were mostly police and media helicopters. but at the same time, what was to stop those w/private planes from doing further damage. because air traffic control had come to a grinding halt because all eyes were on the WTC, Flight 93 and the pentagon.

some pretty sad shit. :(
