EDDIE MURPHY /HEIR TO RICHARD PRYOR OR UNCLE TOM?
Eddie is yet doing another b.s. film (Sherk 2)...This is the guy thats suppose to be the best next to you Mr. pryor...but do ya think he's selling out for the bucks doing these crappy films?! Still waiting for the eddie of "48 Hrs, and Trading Places etc" to come back. Also, I think I'm one of the few who still likes Harlem Nights. You and eddie had great chemstry. The only problem was that it was set in the 30's! Overall cool film! The opening scene is straight out of your comic act, "Craps."

jermainebailey,
The problem with Harlem Nights wasn't the setting, it was Murphy. While I'll be the first to admit he has done some funny shit (even if it was ripped off from TMIC) HArlem Nights was carried by its supporting cast. Mr. Pryor was excellent, Della was beautiful, and Redd was a blind motherfucker! The problem was how much the entire film was set up to kiss Murphy's ass. I still love the film, but get sick of Murphy. The other things that bug me are the hair (most are not proper for the time) The music (it fits, but much of which was written AFTER the film supposedly is set) and the sets (110 & Lenox??? Come on, it's not a 4 way street. Where is the park?) A good film that could have been great. If you remove Foxx, Reese, Aiello, & Pryor, it would have been shit...)

LUCHIA ON THE MUTHAFUCKIN' CASE!
I had a thread on this a while back, jermaine, and I had about three questions all pertaining to Eddie Murphy and Mr. P answered with a hard "No". Basically, I think Mr. P is like, "Fuck Eddie Murphy!" I could be wrong though. He didn't elaborate it on it.
I think this is a topic that weighs on everybody's minds these days who were once fans of Eddie Murphy. The only logical answer I can come up with that MAY explain why he's doing all these children's films is because he's a father now and he's catering primarily to their tastes. The problem with this scenario is it doesn't work for him at all. He looks so out of his element in ALL of these films that it just feels like something is not right in the land of Murph! I also believe that little scare he had back in the day with the transexual put him on a different path also. It would be nice if he did one every now and then, but he's now made a fuckin' career out of children's films and for me that's not even cool, because I know what he used to be and where he's been and I wouldn't even feel right taking my kid to see "Dr. Doolittle 2".
He's fuckin' Reggie Hammond for christ's sake!

jermainebailey,
I am a fan of Murphy's older stuff, before he sold out and started making the Adventures of Pussy Nash. Heir to The Man's throne? Did God have a back up? And neither does Mr. Pyror. Besides.......He Ain't Dead Yet Motherf**ker!

sidewalkgod,
The Pryor throne is too heavy for anyone to take on, really. I mean, even the movies that Mr. P took on for just the money are now considered classics by some people! I would've never thought "Moving" would be as popular as it is by some people here. I think it's a generational thing, because I came up in the "raw, hard-core" Pryor era and it seemed he was going soft in the 80's, so I was put off by most of those films. But even he admits that those movies were done for money alone, not artistic integrity. I guess it can happen to the best of them. But thinking on it, you can't really put Murph in the same category with Mr. P. Two different eras, two different set of circumstances. It's like comparing Jordan to Dr. J.
I say note for note Mr. P is the better if for nothing else, he overcame more adversity to get to where he's gotten and Murphy was catered to most of his career.
There is no heir to the throne!
Richard Pryor is a once in a lifetime experience, I'm just glad I made it in time to enjoy the whole ride!

dougdigitalpro,
I've always liked Moving! Cracked me up when I first saw it. Cant say the same about Brewsters Millions, Some Kind of Hero and the last 2 crappy films he did with Gene Wilder...but I dont have a guilty pleaure of LOVING the Toy! Loved it as a kid and love it now...C'mon, 2 of the greatest comics was on screen: Rich and Jackie Gleason..cant go wrong!

jermainebailey,
Yeah, I guess. I have to be honest, I have never watched "The Toy" from beginning to end. I don't know, it just never appealed to me and that came out in 1983. I was still young enough to enjoy it, I just didn't. Something about a black man being some white kid's "toy" just didn't hit me the right way. I always gravitated toward his more "realistic" roles like Joe Braxton in "Bustin' Loose" or Harry in "Stir Crazy". It seemed he enjoyed those roles and had a vested interest in the projects. I never got that from "The Toy". Even if it was Jackie Gleason he was working with. "Moving" was ok and showed signs of the ol' Mr. P, but it was something he was involved in during the era of "Cosby" and I feel like that's what he was appealing to. The fatherly role. There was good slapstick there, though.

dougdigitalpro,
Let me interject:
Don't front on The Toy!!You do know that ERIC BATES is literally a member of this site!!!!
I understand all your objections but that really was a great movie!!!Here's what I had to say in another thread about THE TOY:
That's weird that this movie doesn't get the props it deserves b/c the crazy thing is I've never thought that this was a bad movie.Hell I used to want to be that kid just to kick it with Rich!!And you can't forget this was also the comedic pairing of Richard Pryor and the late great Jackie Gleason.
It's like critics were saying it was derogatory because he worked for the "man" like it was a fucking throwback to slavery!!I don't know too many people who could've turned down the money "Masterbates" was dishing out.Especially a recently unemployed brotha!!!
Plus it wasn't like Rich was playing a con or something, he was playing an educated journalist that was out of work! His wife worked in groups that fought against racial injustice in the south! He and that boy crashed that party for the "Grand Wizard"!!
C'mon how could anyone hate that!!!

I went to Zimbabwe. I know how white people feel in America now; relaxed! Cause when I heard the police car I knew they weren't coming after me!

bingolong,
I hear ya' bingo,
I think it's time for me to do some re-discovering of Mr. P's later work. I'll check out "The Toy" one day when I get some time.
