Lenny Bruce

Post by Richard_Pryor »

I listened to Lenny and loved him. I wore out the Green ALbum. He was prosecuted when he should have been treasured. He is an original and we should appreciate him here on this site. He busted doors down and created new fuckin ways to laugh.
He'd be rolling over in his grave if he knew he was pardoned by Pataki a few months ago for a 1960 obscenity bust. A little too late you republican motherfuckers-
He had a routine "How To Relax Your Colored Frends At Parties"-
I loved him. I still love him. Remember Lenny.

Richard,

Lenny was awesome... I was still in the nether regions sitting alongside a road to nowhere well after he was gone but that guy was someone whom I personally respect in a lot of ways from what I know of him.

Here's a really good time-line on Lenny if anyone is interested:

The Man,

I'm still young yet, but I'm doing my share of remembering Lenny Bruce. So, Green Album you say? Is it better than American? He's just one of many on the way of my personal Stand-up/satirist Enlightment research. Is there anyone else that should be recognized on the Greats of Comedy?

jane_haze,
Richard tells me told me they call it The Green Album because the cover had a lot of green in it-Richard has a copy-I'll get you the exact tittle-
Richard has mentioned Mom's Mabley on another board here as someone whom he thinks is/was awesome and influential! jenny

jane_haze,

The Album is "The Sick Humor of Lenny Bruce." The cover is him sitting on a Green Field. Great Album.

As far as other comics you should listen to, so many greats pryor, Carlin, Klein, Hicks - But 2 forgotten greats are Dick Gregory and Mort Sahl. Both guys seem a bit dated now, but they were great comics with something to say.

jane_haze,

Just looked at the album again, the field Lenny is sitting in is actually a cemetary. Priceless.

Jim Mendrinos,

Klein is a new name to throw in the bunch. I haven't thought of finding out about him. Carlin and Hicks...naturly. Greg and Sahl...I've had interests, but I've had trouble finding stuff. I've heard some very insightful things from Gregory. So far I've liked what I've heard.

Thanks for getting that name for me.

A lot of Lenny Bruce's material holds up amazingly almost forty years after the fact. So far I've read How to Talk dirty and Influence People, his autobiography that is good but unfortunately has some serious fibs about his life within, and Ladies and Gentleman....Mr.Lenny Bruce by Albert Goldman, which is written in an annoying 60s 'new journalism' style and tries too hard to get in his head. Also, in the book Seriously Funny(which covers the top comics of the 50s-70s, omitting Carlin and Richard for some dumb reason), there's a great chapter on Lenny Bruce. My favourite bit I've heard him do was one called(I think) "How the Jews and the Blacks got into Show Business".

Me and my buddy are listening to the cd that comes with The Trials of Lenny Bruce. What Lenny went through reminds me of what Howard Stern is going through now. What these right wing Christains are doing is just obscene there taking our rights right out from under us, of course this would all go down in an election year.

What next? The reinstating of Prohibition, and the censoring of everything remotely hinting at sexuality, so we can go back to the days of when the sight of bare ankles make us hard!
